The Budget February 24th, 2003

Mr. Speaker, we are presently working with the provinces and territories on bilateral agreements for such programs. We are still awaiting the provinces' requests. We are ready to work with our sports system partners.

The Budget February 24th, 2003

Mr. Speaker, this week, I met with my provincial and territorial counterparts, and we discussed Canada's sports policy.

In fact, an essential part of one of the action plans is better cooperation with the provinces and territories to increase involvement in physical education in schools.

We are ready to work with our sports system partners.

Amateur Sports February 11th, 2003

Mr. Speaker, the Government of Canada considers the safety of all our athletes as a number one priority. The executive director of the CHA has confirmed to me that the CHA has the same priority.

As a matter of fact, the CHA will be reviewing its decision at its annual meeting to be held in the month of May. However, only 13% of all boys between the ages of 9 and 10 are actually playing contact hockey presently.

Amateur Sport December 13th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, I am very disappointed to see that the coach's comments about certain athletes or groups of athletes continue to be raised. For this reason, this very morning, I am sending a letter to Swimming Canada demanding that the necessary disciplinary action be taken.

Sports December 12th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, earlier today, I required that Sport Canada forward the following statement to all national sports organizations:

Pursuant to the principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the position of Sport Canada is that sports organizations receiving funding from the government must not prohibit athletes who so desire from carrying the Canadian flag or the flag of a province or territory at a sports event, nor should it punish them for doing so.

The purpose of this statement is not to prevent organizers of international sports events from establishing rules and protocols that must be followed—

Sports December 11th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, there are mechanisms in place to review disputes between national organizations and athletes. We are very satisfied with how they are working. This was established on an interim basis, but if there are further questions, we are always prepared to review this with all those involved.

Sports December 11th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, I do not understand why the Bloc Quebecois is reacting in this way. From what I understand, there has been no suspension. The coach may have made some comments, but the government cannot intervene every time a coach makes comments.

Sports December 11th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, we have put in place a sport dispute resolution mechanism. That is the procedure we have put in place.

We do not want to get involved in the politics of this in resolving disputes, but if there is more to the issue, we are always prepared to review it.
