[Hungary, October 24th, 2012]

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to commemorate the 56th anniversary of the 1956 revolution in Hungary.

My father and many youth revolted against the Soviet imposed tyranny on Hungary by becoming freedom fighters, demanding democratic elections. They had democratic elections before and it is my earnest belief that humans have a natural appetite, really, a compulsion, for freedom. However, the Soviets sent in tanks to silence them.

My maternal uncle, a young teacher, was imprisoned,along with many others, barred from disseminating reasoned thought.

The revolution, of course, was unsuccessful.

Behind the Iron Curtain, millions of Europeans endured bread lines, a complete lack of free speech and the classic demonstration of a complete lack of confidence or public support for their policies with locked borders.

I am proud to stand here today to honour those who stood with my father and uncle to fight for freedom and democracy.

I would also like to recognize the members of the Hungarian parliament who are here today in the gallery to celebrate this anniversary.

[Fall Fair and Corn Roast, October 19th, 2012]

Mr. Speaker, on Sunday I had the great pleasure of hosting my neighbours at my community fall fair and corn roast. We hosted a hotly contested pie-eating contest, where we saw Uzair Khan edging just ahead of the competition to come out the winner. The pie-baking contest was judged by our community's heroes: a chief firefighter, a police constable and a paramedic. The highlight of the day was the chubby bunny marshmallow-eating contest, where we saw little Clayton edging out all of the competition. It really was a fun day and I would like to thank all of the volunteers who came together to help make it such as a success and to create some wonderful community memories.

By the way, I can say categorically that my neighbours do not want to see the price of their groceries, gasoline and electricity go up. They are categorically against the NDP's carbon tax that would bring in $21 billion of new revenue.

Mr. Speaker, just last week in my riding I was speaking with constituents at our local hospital fundraiser. My constituents are firmly opposed to a new $21 billion carbon tax that the NDP would propose.

NDP members can deny it all they want but they cannot hide from their plan to bring in $21 billion of new revenues from a carbon tax. The NDP leader said on December 4, 2011 that his cap and trade system “will provide a lot of revenue”. Then last February he further boasted about the plan, saying that “The cap-and-trade system that I propose...will produce billions”.

Our government will never allow the NDP to bring in $21 billion of new revenues from a carbon tax.

[Veterans, October 5th, 2012]

Mr. Speaker, we welcome the recommendations brought forward by the independent Privacy Commissioner.

We are taking steps to ensure our processes meet the highest possible standards.

Our department is implementing all 13 of her recommendations.

Our Conservative government treats the privacy of our nation's heroes as paramount. We will always act to ensure that their privacy is respected.

[Thanksgiving, October 3rd, 2012]

Mr. Speaker, to build on the wonderful community spirit in Mississauga—Brampton South, I am hosting my annual fall fair and corn roast. This free event will take place on Sunday, October 14, at Sandford Farm Park from 1 p.m to 3 p.m.

I invite all of my neighbours to visit my website to sign up for the pie baking and the pie eating contest. There will be a chubby-bunny marshmallow contest for younger children, face painting, bouncy castles, and performances by our local Croatian and South Asian dancers. We will also get some great visits from our new hockey team members, the Steelheads. Of course, our dedicated police officers, firefighters and paramedics will let children crawl through their wonderful vehicles.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I invite all of my neighbours to come and join me and, hopefully, this weekend to join us at the food bank where I will be volunteering with my son.

Mr. Speaker, for weeks the NDP leader has been hiding from a simple question: Would the NDP impose a carbon tax?

Previously, the NDP leader was quite proud of this initiative. His party's platform stated that members expected it would bring in $21 billion in new revenue. The NDP leader even said during his leadership debate that he would have a cap and trade program that would produce billions. Canadians deserve to know the truth. Does the NDP have a tax and spend plan, one that would tax carbon and raise the price of everything? They want to know if the Leader of the Opposition would raise the price of their groceries, gas and electricity.

We call on the New Democrats to come clean and to admit to Canadians that they have a sneaky carbon tax scheme and that they want Canadian taxpayers to keep less of their hard-earned money.

Mr. Speaker, as I indicated during my remarks, under section 20 of the act, there are six very clear principles that need to be addressed by the Minister of Industry as he reviews any possible investment by a foreign state-owned enterprise, or SOE.

Just to provide some level of comfort to viewers at home, Canada has the strongest economy in the G7. No less than German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said:

Canada's path of great budgetary discipline and a very heavy emphasis on growth and overcoming the crisis, not living on borrowed money, can be an example for the way in which problems on the other side of the Atlantic can be addressed.... This is also the right solution for Europe.

I just want to reassure my neighbours back home that while others might bluster and come up with all sorts of, frankly, scare tactics, our government continues to stay focused on the economy and on ensuring that we do what is best for Canadians and Canadian families. We are not about raising the price of gasoline by 10¢ a litre. We understand the devastating impact that would have on the economy. We understand that we need to attract solid, reasonable foreign investment to ensure that we have capital for our businesses to grow.

Mr. Speaker, we are talking about the economy.

I think we have no lessons to take from the NDP, to be fair. Canada's economy is ranked as the top economy in the world among developed countries. That is not us saying that. It is the IMF saying that. It is the OECD saying that.

Clearly, we have a very solid plan to ensure that the Canadian economy continues to succeed.

Mr. Speaker, I find it interesting that the members opposite get up and start making very personal attacks about people as soon as the carbon tax is raised. I think that, clearly, the opposition is quite embarrassed about its $21 billion tax on Canadian families. It is something that would raise the price of everything that people consume. It would raise—

Mr. Speaker, this is terribly insulting. It is on page 4. He might want to pull his platform.

What I would like to do, though, is to thank the House for this opportunity to discuss this very important issue, to encourage additional debate on the issue and to ensure that, at the end of the day, any review of any foreign investment provides a very clear and obvious net benefit to Canada and to our economy.
