Statements in the House

Public Safety November 16th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, we know the potential when it comes to 5G technology and the important impact it will have on Canadians and our economy going forward. That is why we continue to do our due diligence and work with national security experts. We continue to work with our allies.

I can assure the member opposite that we have never and will never compromise when it comes to the safety and well-being of Canadians. We will make a decision in the best interests of Canadians.

Agriculture and Agri-Food November 2nd, 2020

Mr. Speaker, these are important issues, and I have full confidence in the Competition Bureau and its ability to look into these matters. These are issues that Canadians have raised, and I want to thank my hon. colleague for raising this issue as well.

As we have indicated on several occasions, we recognize that the terms of sale we have highlighted, those in respect to the ongoing financial impositions faced by independent grocers, fall under provincial jurisdiction. We encourage our provincial and territorial counterparts to examine this matter. We will continue to keep an eye on this as well.

Agriculture and Agri-Food November 2nd, 2020

Mr. Speaker, that is a very important question. As I said, our government recognizes that the ongoing financial health of independent grocers, food processors and growers is critical to ensuring a robust food supply for Canadians. However, we also recognize that the terms of sale generally fall under areas of provincial jurisdiction.

We encourage our provincial and territorial counterparts to examine the matter. As I said, we will continue to engage with them and work with them because we are here to stand up for Canadians.

Agriculture and Agri-Food November 2nd, 2020

Mr. Speaker, of course it is absolutely disappointing to see grocers impose these costly fees, which fall on thousands of Canadian food producers who are working hard to feed Canadians and support their communities, among the other challenges they are facing right now.

We share the concerns of Canadians, and we want to make sure there are fair market practices in place. We continue to make sure this issue is addressed, and we are going to make sure we work with the provinces to address these issues.

COVID-19 Emergency Response October 29th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for giving me this opportunity to speak.

It is important to have a vaccine strategy. That is why we will keep working with all the companies to find solutions for all Canadians across Canada. That is an absolute priority for our government.

COVID-19 Emergency Response October 29th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his question.

Let me clarify that the company and government in question did not receive any funding from the Government of Canada. We will continue to actively pursue all promising options for a vaccine against COVID-19.

Automotive Industry October 8th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the member for Hamilton East—Stoney Creek for his continued advocacy on behalf of workers.

Today we announced a historic $1.8-billion investment, including a $295-million federal investment to set up Ford Motor Company of Canada's electric vehicle production in Oakville. This will position Canada as a global leader in a growing market, help grow our green economy and secure 5,400 good-paying production jobs across Canada.

Health October 6th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, we have been very clear about investing and supporting made-in-Canada solutions. The member opposite highlights the important investment that we made at the NRC Royalmount facility. This will enable us to produce up to 24 million doses annually.

We will make sure that we continue to work with the provinces and territories and determine the best path forward to ensure Canadians have access to safe and effective vaccines when they are available.

Health September 28th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, the hon. colleague may recall that in March we went out to businesses right across the country and said we needed their support to build up personal protective equipment capacity right here in Canada, and they heard our call loud and clear. There are over 1,000 businesses that have retooled and scaled up their operations to make sure that we have the appropriate personal protective equipment for front-line health care workers. I am very proud of that track record and will continue to support our health care workers and make sure we support the broader economy as well.

Health September 24th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for Saint-Laurent for her question and hard work.

Through our Made in Canada project, we are supporting Canadian businesses, including those mentioned by my colleague, so that our front-line workers have the equipment they need to take care of Canadians. Together, we will continue to make good progress in better protecting the health and safety of Canadians.
