Statements in the House

Public Safety February 10th, 2023

Madam Speaker, violent crime has increased by 32% since this Prime Minister took office. After eight years, gang-related homicides are up by 92%. Canadians are becoming increasingly concerned.

It is sad to see that, in such a peaceful country as Canada, people are now afraid to walk down the street or take the subway in Toronto.

What will the Prime Minister do to take things seriously and put in place real measures to protect people?

Public Safety February 10th, 2023

Madam Speaker, after eight years of this Prime Minister's soft-on-crime policies, the consequences are devastating. In Vancouver, the same 40 offenders were arrested 6,000 times in a single year. The Liberal government is fine with releasing criminals back into their communities.

Shootings in Montreal are on the rise. The government is reducing sentences for gun crimes. This cannot happen in Canada.

When will they introduce tougher measures to keep violent criminals in jail?

National Security Review of Investments Modernization Act February 3rd, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I have a question for my esteemed colleague from Abitibi, who sits on the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology and is the best at promoting his beloved region. I have many things in common with him.

I, too, am a member of the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology, and last year we witnessed the sale of a certain company, Neo Lithium, to be specific. The company, which now belongs to a Chinese group, does not have projects in Canada, but does have one in Argentina.

Will the bill help us hang onto our companies or our rare minerals that we want to develop, and that are highly abundant in Abitibi? Will the bill prevent this type of thing, or, at the very least, reduce the potential impact of these decisions in Canada?

Public Safety February 3rd, 2023

Madam Speaker, this government is acting as though there is no problem. However, Canadians have been dealing with the direct impacts of this government's bad policies for eight years. Nearly half of the shooting-related homicides in Toronto last year were committed by one or more individuals who were out on bail. The last thing people want is for this phenomenon to spread across the country. The bail system needs to be reformed.

Will this government have the courage to do that? If so, will it vote in favour of our motion?

Public Safety February 3rd, 2023

Madam Speaker, after eight years with this Prime Minister, our cities are becoming less and less safe. The crime rate has increased by 32%. Murders committed by street gangs have almost doubled. This is all due to the soft-on-crime approach of this government, which has made it easier for violent criminals to be released on bail and has eliminated mandatory prison sentences for crimes committed with firearms.

When will this government take the violence in our streets seriously?

Liberal Government February 3rd, 2023

Madam Speaker, in its eight years in power, the Liberal government could hardly have done worse.

Inflation is at a 40-year high, and interest rates have gone up nine times in the past year even though, just six months ago, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance said rates would stay low.

As a result, young people cannot afford to buy a house, rents have skyrocketed, and steadily rising food prices are hurting families.

By doubling the national debt, which will cost twice as much interest, this government has made it abundantly clear that it is not to be trusted.

Then there is the justice system, which is broken all across Canada. Repeat offenders can serve their time in the community rather than in jail. Violence has gone up 32% since 2015, and street gang violence has jumped 90% in that time.

It is time the NDP-Liberal coalition handed things over to a team that is qualified to lead the country: the Conservatives.

Official Languages January 30th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, even after $50 million was spent on the ArriveCAN app, the Commissioner of Official Languages has reprimanded the government over the app's language issues.

A Canadian travelling in the United States was unable to get the French version of the app, even though it is one of this country's two official languages. The government spent a fortune on a service that violated the rights of francophones.

After eight years in power, will the government finally admit that it is incompetent, very incompetent?

Carbon Pricing December 9th, 2022

Madam Speaker, people in rural regions like mine and across Canada have to heat their homes. The cold weather has set in. What happens in winter? Bills go up. The worst thing is that they will continue to go up with the Liberals' plan to triple their carbon tax. People do not need long-term measures right now. They need immediate action to help them get through the coming winter. They are stretched thin, and the government remains completely indifferent.

What is the government waiting for? Why does it not immediately cancel its plan to raise that tax?

Committees of the House November 30th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, as you know, we are submitting a dissenting report.

This government went on a spending spree during the COVID‑19 pandemic. Over $200 billion of that was not associated with COVID‑19 at all.

Inevitably, we cannot accept this report as is. That is why we will be filing a dissenting report.

Democratic Institutions November 25th, 2022

Mr. Speaker, ever since it was reported in the media that the Chinese communist regime tried to influence the outcome of elections in Canada, the Prime Minister keeps saying that he was not briefed on it, that he was not informed.

He must know something, however, because Canada's intelligence services cannot keep the Prime Minister in the dark. That is impossible.

Did he receive any briefings or memos on Chinese electoral interference, yes or no?
