Statements in the House

Business of Supply November 3rd, 2020

Madam Speaker, I appreciated my colleague's speech.

Like my Bloc Québécois colleagues, I will support the Conservative motion. I was pleased to hear the hon. member speak at length about tourism.

Of course, hotels and restaurants have been affected, but does my colleague think that small businesses that prepare things such as weddings, shows or other events should also be considered in this motion?

Citizenship Act November 2nd, 2020

Madam Speaker, I have a question for my colleague.

I would like to know how the indigenous communities in her region see this bill. How is it perceived? Do they see hope in this new version of the legislation?

Michel Letarte October 26th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I want to acknowledge Michel Letarte for his exceptional contribution to the Trois-Rivières community.

Mr. Letarte was a police officer for nearly 30 years and became known for his community involvement and his infectious humour and kindness. He owns an eco-friendly cycling company and has stepped up to help the Artisans de la paix en Mauricie with their food deliveries. He has also been a professional singer for 20 years. Mr. Letarte is also a founder of a growing movement in Quebec. The events industry is a cultural tool whose primary purpose is to promote this sector, which has been hit hard by the public health crisis. Mr. Letarte is a model of perseverance and generosity.

On behalf of the people of Trois-Rivières, I want to thank Michel.

Mr. Speaker, my colleague referred to various proposals put forward in the throne speech.

He spoke about retirees who have decided to change their lives at this time. However, in the throne speech, there is nothing for people 65 and older. The Liberals are only offering an income supplement starting at age 75.

Why does my colleague think that the government has chosen to ignore a segment of retirees, of older people, who are often women, and seniors who find themselves alone?

Mr. Speaker, before I begin, I want to thank the member for her appeal on behalf of women.

She left out one category of women, however. Senior women, aged 65 to 75 years old, worked hard and helped make Quebec what it is today. The government has offered assistance to senior women over the age of 75, but 65-year-old women, who worked their whole lives, did not receive any assistance from the government.

Does my colleague think that is fair? Can the government give these women some real, concrete assistance to get through the pandemic?

I have first-hand experience with the pandemic. I was very close to my sister, who died from COVID-19. She was in a residence—

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for his speech.

He pointed out that women have been affected by the pandemic. However, is the government's proposal not contradictory, given that women are encouraged to be entrepreneurs but they have to stay home to look after their young children affected by COVID-19?

What are his solutions?

Judges Act October 2nd, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my hon. colleague for her speech.

Does she think women who were victims of rape are being given enough credibility? According to what the minister said, police officers are the first ones in charge of deciding whether the women's statements are credible.

Does she believe it is okay to wait until the matter is before a judge?

Madam Speaker, before I answer my colleague, I would like to echo other members in recognizing and thanking the workers and volunteers who were on the front lines during the pandemic. Now that the second wave is upon us, much will be asked of them.

What the Bloc Québécois wants the government to do for farmers is uphold supply management.

I would like to hear my colleague's thoughts on calls for supply-managed farmers to get what we hope will be full and fair compensation for trade agreements.

Madam Speaker, I would like to take this opportunity to salute all of my colleagues here in the House, who have kept working and serving their constituents very well during the pandemic.

The member talked about transportation, so I would like to take this opportunity to point out that Trois-Rivières has no train service. We are waiting for the high-frequency train that Mr. Trudeau's government promised years ago.

I would like to know if my colleague supports taking action on that.

Business of Supply March 12th, 2020

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for Churchill—Keewatinook Aski and the hon. member for Cumberland—Colchester for their speeches. They clearly have a lot of empathy and compassion for the most vulnerable members of our society and their constituents. The Bloc is also sensitive to the needs of our constituents.

However, does the member for Cumberland—Colchester acknowledge that larger transfers to the provinces would give each Canadian province and territory more latitude and freedom to spend money based on the individual needs of their citizens?
