Statements in the House

Rail Transportation February 5th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, I had the opportunity to visit Lac-Mégantic last Saturday. I truly understand that the residents are having a hard time. They went through a terrible tragedy, and we know that the reconstruction will take time. We will be there to help them rebuild their lives, their community, and their town. A study on the possibility of bypassing the town is currently being conducted. We will wait for the results before making a decision.

Housing February 5th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, again, I thank the hon. member for the question.

We have been quite clear, as my colleague sitting next to me can attest, that we will make a massive $20-billion investment in social infrastructure over 10 years. This includes affordable housing and social housing. In my riding, I know that there is a list of 23,000 families who are waiting for social housing. There is a pressing need.

During the election campaign, we promised we would address this issue, and that is what we will do.

Housing February 5th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for the question. I know she works very hard advocating for social housing.

During the election campaign, our party promised to invest heavily in social infrastructure, including not just affordable housing, but also social housing. We know there is a pressing need to build new social housing and renovate existing social housing.

Foreign Affairs February 5th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, as my colleague, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, clearly stated, we made the decision to make a significant contribution to the coalition to destroy the Islamic State, but we will do so in an integrated and comprehensive manner. As soon as the plan is ready, Canadians will support it.

Port of Québec February 4th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, we certainly recognize that the Port of Québec is an important port along the St. Lawrence that is part of Quebec's maritime strategy. This port plays a key role in the delivery of bulk commodities and, as my colleague mentioned, in the ferry sector. We are examining this request and will make a decision in the near future.

Transportation February 1st, 2016

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague from Rivière-des-Mille-Îles for her excellent question.

Our government recognizes that using alternative fuels will play a very important role in our transition to a greener economy. Naturally this includes public transit, but also networks of electric vehicle charging stations. This will play a very important role. It is part of the infrastructure. This will help our economy and our environment.

Rail Transportation January 26th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, rail safety is of paramount importance for this government.

Recently we took action against CP with respect to the issue of railway personnel fatigue. This is something that concerns us. There are far too many derailments occurring in this country. We have to improve rail safety.

We are going to continue to work in that direction so that municipalities across this country feel that their rail system is secure. This is an undertaking from this government.

Air Transportation January 26th, 2016

Mr. Speaker, I thank the Leader of the Opposition for the question. It allows me to repeat that we took an undertaking during the last election to the people of Toronto, who care about the development of their waterfront, that we would not reopen the tripartite agreement. We have kept that promise and we are very proud of it.

Transportation December 9th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for his question.

There are 89 designated airports in Canada, where security is provided by Transport Canada. The previous government implemented a mechanism whereby other non-designated airports can have access to the same security system on a cost-recovery basis. I know that the Sherbrooke airport is one of the six airports that applied.

Transportation December 9th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, we in this government care deeply about rail safety, especially after the tragic events at Lac-Mégantic.

I can assure the member that we are looking into this at the moment. Transport Canada officials are specifically looking at this case. We will report back when we have the final verdict.
