Statements in the House

Ethics February 7th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, it is well understood that parliamentarians, members of the House of Commons and the Senate are expected to maintain residences in the region they represent as well as here in the national capital region so they can do their work here. The Senate has rules that cover that. Those are currently being reviewed, and they are also reviewing to make sure that all senators in fact adhere to those rules, as we expect they will.

Ethics February 7th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, as members well know, we have asked the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration to ensure that the Senate's policies are indeed followed, that they are adhered to, and indeed that they are appropriate. That is exactly the process that is taking place right now.

Points of Order February 6th, 2013

They are in both official languages. In the second document I was submitting I inadvertently read the MP's name. He is the NDP MP for St. John's East. I apologize for reading his name in the House.

This is also a submission respecting boundaries. I have only started on the east coast. I have only done Newfoundland, but so far 100% of the NDP MPs have tabled such submissions on the boundary process.

Points of Order February 6th, 2013

I am tabling some documents, and I am just explaining the documents. He referred to submissions having been made by members of the NDP. I started on the east coast, and I have here a submission to the boundary commission that I would like to table from the NDP member for St. John's South—Mount Pearl. I have another submission from the NDP member Mr. Jack Harris. I apologize. I meant the member for St. John's East

Points of Order February 6th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, after the Prime Minister indicated that the electoral boundary commissions actually seek participation of political parties, members of Parliament and the public in their process, the member for Toronto—Danforth got up and said that the non-partisan commissions expect non-interference from the political parties and that no party with a basic sense of ethics would interfere.

I thought I would check it out. The Prime Minister did refer to certain—

Ethics February 6th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, as has been said many times in the chamber, all parliamentarians are expected to maintain a residence both in their home region and here in the national capital region.

The Senate is, as we know, doing a review of its current rules and ensuring that they are properly applied to all senators.

That this Committee take note of the conflict in Mali.

Business of the House February 5th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, there have been consultations among all parties, and I believe you will find the unanimous consent of the House for the following motion:

That, notwithstanding any Standing Order or usual practices of the House, during the debate today pursuant to Standing Order 53.1, no quorum calls, requests for unanimous consent or dilatory motions shall be received by the Chair, and any member rising to speak during debate may indicate to the Chair that he or she will be dividing his or her time with another member.

Ethics February 5th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, as I said, the Senate is responsible for those rules. It has its own committee that is reviewing them and all the senators subject to them, to ensure that the rules are indeed applied properly, as we all expect they will be.

Ethics February 5th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, for a number of weeks we have heard the hon. member advocating in the House a double standard for himself compared with other people. We certainly do not hold by that. In fact, we do have a clear standard on this. All people on both sides of the House recognize that all parliamentarians are expected to maintain residences in their home region and the national capital region. We know that the Senate is reviewing those rules and making sure that they are applied properly and are appropriate.
