Statements in the House

Trade October 20th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister for International Trade.

Since 1975 Australia has prohibited the import of Canadian salmon due to bogus health concerns.

Can the minister tell us what is happening with Canada's complaint to the WTO on this matter?

Canadian Forces October 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, concern has been raised whether the Canadian Forces assist British Columbia in case of natural disaster.

Can the Minister of National Defence tell the House what the Canadian Forces did to assist British Columbia during the summer battle against forest fires?

Chin Wing Chun Tong Society Of Canada September 28th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am very pleased to announce the 80th anniversary of the Chin Wing Chun Tong Society of Canada.

This organization provides many programs for the Chinese community in Canada. For 80 years it has been making a great contribution to business, culture and education in Canada.

Recently the first North American Chan's Kinship Conference was held which brought together descendants of the Chan clan from all over North America.

Congratulations to the organizers and members of the Vancouver Chans for making their organization a great success.

Gun Control September 22nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, on September 1 the hon. member for Yorkton—Melville told Alberta radio listeners that Canada should look to the U.S. for leadership on guns.

I cannot believe that the Reform Party would want Canada to follow the American gun culture. Every day in the U.S. there are firearm tragedies happening in many homes. How many children will have to die before the Reform Party realizes that the U.S. is not an example Canadians want to follow? How long will it take them to realize that these are not Canadian values?

Official Languages September 21st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I want to congratulate the ministers of heritage, justice and the treasury board who sponsored the recent National Symposium on Canada's Official Languages.

This celebration and examination of Canada's Official Languages Act assessed official bilingualism policies in Canada.

This year marks the 10 year anniversary of the 1988 Official Languages Act legislation which recognized the equal status of English and French in federal institutions.

Congratulations to all involved with this excellent initiative.

Petitions June 8th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I have a petition from British Columbians. They are asking parliament to withdraw or cancel the pesticide use permit number 21401898 issued to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the ministry of agriculture and that parliament enact legislation to prevent the spraying of the citizens of Canada with bacteria and chemical pesticides in the future. This petition has been signed by more than 2,000 citizens.

Justice June 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, in recent years many disturbing property crimes occurred in B.C. such as home invasion, mugging and robbing of homeowners.

Yesterday the government announced our crime prevention initiative. Could the Minister of Justice inform the House how this initiative will assist our communities to prevent such crimes?

People With Disabilities June 1st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, recently Rick Hansen met with me to discuss neurotrauma and initiatives to promote prevention and rehabilitation.

My question is for the Minister of Human Resources Development. Is the government going to provide assistance for people with disabilities in western Canada?

Apec May 25th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the Finance Minister of Canada hosted a conference for 21 APEC finance ministers from May 22 to May 24 in Kananaskis, Alberta. They discussed a global financial strategy for coping with the Asian crisis. With vision and leadership, the Minister of Finance made a proposal for a global mechanism to monitor the financial and banking system of the world. The G-8 leaders have recently endorsed such a plan. Again, our government is taking leadership in providing a solution for a global crisis.

Trade May 12th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister for International Trade. It is about a recent move by U.S. customs to reclassify predrilled boards as ordinary lumber.

This seems to contravene the free trade agreement and will threaten jobs in western Canada. How will the government protect the Canadian lumber industry from this threat?
