Franco-Ontarian Flag October 4th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the Franco-Ontarian flag is now 25 years old. Unfurled officially in Sudbury on September 25, 1975, this flag symbolizes Franco-Ontarian solidarity and testifies to our desire to occupy our rightful place in Ontario in the economic, political and cultural sectors.

To celebrate this anniversary, the ACFO of Ottawa—Carleton, in partnership with a number of francophone organizations, presented “La francophonie en couleurs 2000” at the Ottawa Civic Centre on September 29 and 30. This celebration brought together over 10,000 francophones from all corners of the province.

I invite all my colleagues to join with me in wishing the Franco-Ontarian flag a long life.

International Co-Operation September 27th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the new social development priorities have resulted in CIDA's first ever budget for child protection, with $122 million earmarked over the next five years for this priority.

We have even created a children's secretariat within CIDA.

In addition, by appointing General Roméo Dallaire special adviser for the protection of war affected children, the minister is assured of obtaining the best possible advice.

International Development September 19th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, on September 5, the Minister for International Cooperation tabled a five-year plan targeting four key sectors of social development in developing countries.

A total of $2.8 billion will be invested in these priority sectors over the next five years. Funding for health and nutrition will more than double, while amounts earmarked for basic education, the fight against HIV/AIDS, and the protection of children will quadruple.

CIDA's social development priorities will allow Canada to bring a greater focus to its international development priorities. It will ensure that Canadian resources are invested where the needs are most pressing.

This framework for action presents a clear vision that will make Canada's development assistance program even more effective in building a better quality of life for some of the poorest and most marginalized people in the world.

International Cooperation June 2nd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, among other things, CIDA will use this new funding to contribute $5 million to the international AIDS vaccine initiative, $3.8 million to UNICEF for research on anti-HIV drugs, and $13 million over five years for AIDS education and prevention programs in Malawi.

Environmental Protection May 19th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government has introduced its endangered species bill, a bill that is important to the protection of our environment. Canada has a rich heritage of climate and scenery and it is important that it be protected.

This is what the government is working towards by seeking to have this bill passed. We feel that protection of endangered species concerns all levels of government. The Government of Canada is meeting its commitments. It is implementing a balanced policy to save our fauna and flora.

This bill would require that strategies be defined to identify each endangered specie. This is another example of the government's interest in protecting and promoting our environment, a heritage that we all wish to preserve and pass on to our children.

Franco-Action Telethon May 8th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the second edition of the Franco-Action telethon was held yesterday afternoon on Rogers community television, in the Ottawa region.

The organizers of this event exceeded their objective, collecting close to $105,000. These funds will be going to the Montfort Hospital Foundation, the Fondation Pauline-Charron to benefit seniors, and the Ottawa District Boy Scouts.

On behalf of all of my colleagues in the House of Commons, I wish to congratulate the organizers of this telethon and all those who participated in it, and to express particular thanks to all those who pledged a donation to the Franco-Ontarian community.
