Health February 24th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, today I rise to comment on the growing threat of infectious diseases and emerging infections.

Our civilization is at a crossroads where diseases once thought to be a menace of the past are once again becoming a health threat.

The emergence of diseases such as tuberculosis is creating concern on the public health front. The federal government along with its provincial counterparts must remain sufficiently prepared to combat this threat.

Although Canada is also at a debt and deficit crossroads, there is a great need to maintain the laboratory centre for disease control and encourage provinces to enhance public health surveillance.

To adequately evaluate and monitor vaccine issues such as new vaccine submissions, safety and efficiency, we must ensure that there is sufficient knowledgeable staff and physician expertise at the health protection branch of Health Canada.

The same problem exists for Canada's blood supply. We must be constantly alert in monitoring problems in the supply of this, our most precious resource.

I urge the federal government and its provincial counterparts to remain committed to the fight against infectious diseases and emerging infections.

Canadian Armed Forces February 9th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, this question is for the Minister of National Defence.

On several occasions the minister has assured this House of his strong concern for the health and welfare of the Canadian troops. Is the minister aware that Canadian forces personnel are complaining that they are experiencing effects which are sometimes called the gulf war syndrome?

Can the minister tell this House what is being done to address these complaints for the future well-being of the Canadian forces members?

Stratford Festival December 14th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I congratulate the Stratford Festival, Canada's national English language theatre, on the conclusion of its 1994 season. All 10 plays enjoyed outstanding critical reviews and for the first time since 1990 the season was a financial success.

The festival realized in excess of $17 million in box office receipts, $3.5 million through fund raising and received only $900,000 in federal grants. In return, the theatre generates $150 million worth of business in the community and generates $25 million in taxes.

I wish all those associated with the Stratford Festival another successful season. I encourage all members of the House to join with us in 1995 when, in the words of the festival's artistic director Richard Monette, the Stratford adventure continues.

Chiropractic Profession December 9th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, 1995 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the chiropractic profession. Few people know that the study of this profession was founded by a Canadian, Mr. Daniel David Palmer, born at Port Perry, Ontario.

Today its practice is used worldwide. In fact many members of this Chamber, including myself, use its services.

I would like to extend to all members of this honourable profession a happy anniversary. I would also like to let them know that I share their disappointment over the decision of Canada Post not to commemorate this achievement in the medical area.

Madam Speaker, I would like to present a petition on behalf of my constituents asking that the Canadian Human Rights Act not include the phrase sexual orientation as a grounds for discrimination. I place the petition on the table.
