Statements in the House

Terrorism November 27th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, as I said previously, we do our intelligence work on the basis of substantiated facts. Some of the information that the member has brought forward will certainly be considered.

Hezbollah has been banned under the United Nations and the member knows that. We will do our duty in Canada in a very balanced and accurate way and list entities as we see fit as the information comes forward.

Terrorism November 27th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the member knows that the government is not afraid to ban entities that we are worried about in terms of terrorist activities.

There is a process in place. It is the law of the land and we will abide by that process. At an appropriate time, when all the work is done, we will table the entities that we want listed under that act.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, I reject the allegation in the member's question. That kind of attitude of that member is not the attitude that should be shown in the House. I am pleased with the way the RCMP does its hiring.

Organized Crime November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, I certainly want to congratulate the men and women of the police forces across Canada for their important work in this area.

Big sweeps by the RCMP and its police partners, such as the one that took place last week, clearly show that co-ordinated police efforts do in fact pay off, but we do need to do more. That is why the RCMP has appointed a national marijuana grow operations coordinator to build on our efforts to fight organized crime and drug trafficking right across Canada.

Telemarketing November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the member knows very well that the government is very committed to fighting cross-border crime. In budget 2001 we put in place a number of expenditures that went to better policing and better protection against cross-border crime. We will continue to do more as time goes on.

Telemarketing November 26th, 2002

Mr. Speaker, as the hon. member admitted himself, I already said in the House that the telemarketing schemes have indeed been suspended and a review is taking place. That review is being analysed.

I thank the hon. member for the additional information he has provided this afternoon.

Public Safety November 22nd, 2002

Mr. Speaker, I reject entirely the preamble of the member's question that the government does nothing. It has been improving and putting more resources into the public safety of the country.

In the last budget the government put in place in moneys for anti-terrorism and other policing measures. We have improved, because of that bill, our communication between all police forces across the country. It is with that communication that we can do a better job of policing, and we are doing it.

Justice November 22nd, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member opposite should know that the government sees it as a priority. Protecting children against sexual exploitation is a high priority. We are going after the predators. We have done that. There have been a number of changes to the Criminal Code to improve it . The government will continue to see that as a priority to prevent sexual exploitation against minors.

Terrorism November 22nd, 2002

Mr. Speaker, the Government of Canada condemns in the strongest possible way the brutal and senseless murder that took place yesterday in Jerusalem. It strikes against everything that a civilized society stands for. Our hearts do go out to the victims of that senseless killing.

With respect to the listing, I have told the member before that there is a process in place. As the Minister of Foreign Affairs has previously said, Hamas is listed on the United Nations Suppression of Terrorism Regulations. CSIS does not need a list in this country in order to do its job.

Justice November 22nd, 2002

Mr. Speaker, if there is one thing we can be proud of, it is the intelligence work that CSIS does and the good cooperation it has with its American counterpart south of the border.

I can assure the member that in all intelligence matters we cooperate with other intelligence services around the world in the interests of the health and safety of Canadians and in the interests of national security.
