Human Resources committee  You're disagreeing that the province has come to you and asked for help. You have these private operators.... For the record, Minister, this is your Liberal MP colleague, Kody Blois from Kings—Hants, who wrote an email on April 22, 2024, stating, “I am receiving a considerable number of calls from families who are unable to find a child care space in their local area.

The Budget  Conservatives have used their past powers to make their corporate friends even richer by instituting $60-billion corporate handouts, which I want to say the Liberals have continued to support, while they cut services for women, families, seniors and persons with disabilities. By contrast, the NDP, with only 24 MPs, forced the government to enhance the social safety net that lowers costs for Canadians by addressing affordability, health care, housing, climate and more.

Business of Supply  I will point out the estimates in question. ArriveCAN is mentioned in the supplementary estimates (B), 2021-22, on pages pages 2-2 and 2-82. ArriveCAN is also mentioned in the supplementary estimates (C), 2021-22, on page 1-19. These budgets were voted on as a block. If we had voted against them, like the Conservative Party members did, we would have been voting against the construction and management of indigenous women's shelters, against financial support for festivals and tourism, against community revitalization, against financial support for mental health and against support for Afghan nationals, support that the member for Charlesbourg—Haute-Saint-Charles was screaming for in the House.

National Council for Reconciliation Act  Bill C-53 was introduced on June 21, 2023, the last day of a House sitting session. Bill C-29, of course, was introduced June 22, 2022, which was the last day of a session. I do not know about my colleagues, but the trend certainly does not scream “priority” to me. Indigenous people deserve more than a last-minute Liberal effort.

Labour  They are often underpaid and under-employed. They have dipped into their own pockets so many times to support our women and men in uniform, and they are proud to do so. They are proud to do this work. Many are facing a rent spike this year to on-base housing. When military family members join the workforce, they are in a precarious position.

Human Resources committee  States shall take effective measures and, where appropriate, special measures to ensure continuing improvement of their economic and social conditions. Particular attention shall be paid to the rights and special needs of indigenous elders, women, youth, children and persons with disabilities. We know the child welfare system is a direct pipeline to murdered and missing indigenous women. Article 22 reads: Particular attention shall be paid to the rights and special needs of indigenous elders, women, youth, children and persons with disabilities in the implementation of this Declaration.

Veterans Affairs committee  Thank you very much, MP Blaney, for your support on the Merlo Davidson report in question period. I really appreciate that. I think transition is key. I think what this committee is looking at are veterans in particular.

Criminal Code  She wants women and girls to know that these behaviours are not acceptable and to have the tools to get out. These stories are all too common. I urge my colleagues, especially my male colleagues, to talk to the women in their lives.

Canada Early Learning and Child Care Act  For example, specifically as a direct result of Bill C-35 and the budgetary measures by this government, there is no doubt that we will see an increase in the workforce. We are going to see more, in particular, women participating in the economy. As a direct result of that, when more women are participating in the economy, more taxes are generated. When members say that there is a cost for child care, there is a cost benefit that also needs to be factored in.

Criminal Code  I want to thank the member for Oakville North—Burlington, the member for Edmonton Strathcona and the member for Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan. A number of other MPs took part in the work, but it was this group of MPs who worked in greater depth on the bill and managed to find some common ground. I would also like to take this opportunity to tell them that I am proud of the work we accomplished.

Government Business No. 25—Proceedings on Bill C-21  At the time, the Conservatives delayed the bill at committee and eventually voted against it in the House. While many refuse to talk about it, gun control is a women's issue. The Canadian Women's Foundation notes that the presence of firearms in Canadian households is the single greatest risk factor for the lethality of intimate partner violence. Access to a firearm increases the likelihood of femicide by 500%.

Budget Implementation Act, 2023, No. 1  There are thousands of families left out because there are no spaces and there is no labour strategy to help with the labour shortage. Women cannot go to work because they cannot access child care and the wait-lists are years long. One female child care operator wrote on a public forum this morning, “Why are so many child care providers closing?

Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act  Peter ends his letter by saying that we know more about the wood in our chair, the coffee in our cup and the tobacco we smoke than we do about the welfare of the millions of men, women and children that produced them, and that that is wrong. I urge all members to support the immediate adoption of Bill S-211. Again, I want to thank the MP for Scarborough—Guildwood, our colleagues in the Senate and all who have worked so hard to get this bill to where it is today.

Committees of the House  Washington had already announced a slew of sanctions against the Iranian morality police and several security officials on September 22. Iran's strict dress code forces women to wear the Islamic head scarf, but according to videos posted online, women are leading the protests in Iran. Schoolgirls even organized rallies in several regions, where they removed their hijabs and shouted anti-regime slogans.

Criminal Code  That is why, three years ago, we were able to get the House of Commons to finally recognize February 22 as Human Trafficking Awareness Day. However, when we look at the legislation that the government has introduced over the past eight years regarding human trafficking, it is taking Canada in the wrong direction.
