Employment  We are reducing taxes not only for families but also for the companies that hire workers. The Liberal Party believes that the budget will balance itself, but that is not true, just as it is not true for families' budgets either. Given the opportunity, the Liberals would raise taxes, which would be harmful to families and employment.

Intergovernmental Affairs  Contrast that with the Liberals' approach, who hope that through hocus-pocus, the budget will balance itself. Instead, we know that they will hike taxes, run a deficit, and leave a burden of debt to our kids and our grandchildren.

Business of Supply  Meanwhile, the Conservative government for its part prefers to let things go, rather than intervene immediately and appropriately. This approach reminds me of a young person who believes that the budget can balance itself. The invisible hand inevitably interacts with forces in the economy only when economic stimulus is applied and when there is something palpable to activate the economic process.

Taxation  Second, our family tax cut will help families balance their family budget. Third, and most importantly, the Liberal leader thinks a budget can balance itself. Our government will continue to help Canadian families keep their hard-earned money in their pockets.

Business of Supply  That is wishful thinking, and it is almost as bad as the Liberal leader talking about a budget that balances itself.

Taxation  Unfortunately, the Liberal leader has no idea what it is like to be a middle-income earner. In fact, he even claims that a budget can balance itself. Despite what Liberal members call their own leader's “bozo eruption”, our Conservative government continues to take action that actually helps middle-income families and puts more money in their pockets, where it belongs.

Business of Supply  Our economic action plan has five pillars that have helped create more than one million new jobs since the recession. The Liberal plan has one line: the budget will balance itself. How will the Liberals' manage that? It is a question that puzzles most Canadians. After all, at its last policy convention, the Liberal Party committed to no less than 10 new national strategies.

Business of Supply  Then again, maybe that is not surprising, since the Liberal leader thinks that our budget will balance itself, and he is still working on a definition of just who is in the middle class. Let us come back to today's debate. I respect the intent of the hon. member's motion. Bills amending the Canada Elections Act and the Parliament of Canada Act are of particular interest to members, as they concern the very functioning of our democracy.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  Mr. Speaker, the member is saying he will do $100 billion. Yes, and the budget will balance itself, his leader said.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  It is worth talking about a little bit. Unlike the Liberal leader, who said that the budget would balance itself, we do not believe that, and we put in place a plan back in 2006 that started the process of working toward a balanced budget. That is when we got into government. The opposition forgets that we paid down $37 billion in federal debt before the recession hit.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  They know that it did not happen by accident. In fact, the flippant quip by the Liberal leader that the budget will balance itself is a tragic example of his misunderstanding of economics. Unfortunately, it is in keeping with the naive and laughable statements that he is becoming well known for. However, this is not Canada's funniest home videos, and this is not leadership.

Business of the House  I am also confident that he will not choose as the subject of debate the matter of eliminating the budget deficit. After all, he says the budget will balance itself.

The Economy  The Liberal leader has threatened dangerous new deficit spending that would take Canada down the same roads as Detroit and Greece. I am not surprised that someone who believes that “the budget will balance itself” would also believe that we can spend our way to prosperity.

Employment  That is because the government and this Prime Minister and this Minister of Finance understand budgets and finance, unlike the opposition, which thinks with pixie dust and well wishes the budget will balance itself.

Ethics  He is prepared to enter into a tax-and-spend coalition led by a Liberal leader who thinks that the budget simply balances itself. We will make sure that never happens and that Canadians can have a good, competent government for a very long time.
