Judges Act  Madam Speaker, I will be sharing my time with the member for Saanich—Gulf Islands. As I prepared to talk today about Bill C-3, I could not help, like many of us I am sure, to think back to what we had experienced and learned over the course of our lives. I am firmly ensconced in white guy middle age, in old white guy zone.

Broadcasting Act  Mr. Speaker, I must admit I was somewhat entertained by the previous question, and I am curious if my hon. colleague could speak to this legislation being important. As it is written right now, it seems like it is written for the sake of writing something on paper. It is going to need an awful lot more work, I would think, for it to actually be useful, important and viable.

Broadcasting Act  Madam Speaker, I was interested in my colleague's comment that the Conservatives believe in equity and the importance of making sure there is an even playing field. I wonder if he could elaborate a little on that. Because of the cozy nature of the government's relationship with Facebook, for example, does the member feel this is again about the Liberals picking winners and losers?

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, I have a petition calling on the House of Commons to formally recognize that Uighurs in China have been and are being subjected to genocide. The petitioners are calling to use the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act, the Sergei Magnitsky Law, and sanction those who are responsible for these heinous crimes being committed against the Uighur people.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I want to thank my hon. colleague for his advocacy, his bravery and his words today. I really do appreciate it. I wanted to give the member an opportunity to provide a bit more to his comments relating to a charter challenge and ensuring this important legislation, which bans something truly heinous and wrong, is not the subject of a charter challenge in the courts.

Canada Revenue Agency Act  Madam Speaker, I want to thank my friend and colleague, the hon. member for Calgary Confederation, for sponsoring this bill, for his perseverance through our legislative process, and for his lifetime of advocacy and action on the issue of organ and tissue donation. I am honoured to second Bill C-210, a bill which would improve organ and tissue donation registration in Canada.

Telecommunications  Mr. Speaker, for five years the Liberals have promised to accelerate Internet access for rural Canadians and last week in the throne speech we heard the same accelerated promises. Rural Canadians from Inverness to Ignace, Fort Nelson to Gaspé, and Magnetawan to Havelock know now more than ever that Internet access is not a luxury.

Internet Services  Mr. Speaker, my constituents are not buying the vacuous platitudes of the current government anymore. Working from home, educating our kids and running our businesses are the fundamentals. This year we have been reminded of the importance of connectivity as we work our way through the COVID-19 crisis from our homes.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I am still very concerned about the debt. I recognize that all governments have carried on deficit spending over the years. We have spoken about the Chrétien-Martin government and how it actually reigned in the debt and dealt with it. However, it dealt with it by pushing a lot of that spending on to the provinces that then pushed it on to the municipalities, where I used to serve.

Telecommunications  Madam Speaker, people in Parry Sound—Muskoka, like so many in northern Ontario, are frustrated with the high price and low quality of Internet and cellphone services. We keep hearing the promises to fix it, but areas like Port Loring, Kearney and Whitestone are still dramatically under-serviced.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  Mr. Speaker, I can appreciate that the Liberal government would just love to have us rubber-stamp whatever it puts in front of us, but the awkward thing here of course is we have not seen anything yet. We would love to work together. We would love to try to find solutions to problems and support something, but it would be really nice if we could see a copy of the text.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  Mr. Speaker, there are certainly a lot of examples. One of the issues we have faced a great deal in Parry Sound—Muskoka is housing. The government has committed billions of dollars. However, we would like to see it go back to a program from the Chrétien era which was a capital subsidy to help get more affordable units built.

Resumption of debate on Address in Reply  Mr. Speaker, I am happy to try to work together with people. The challenge we have with a price on pollution in my mind is that it is an urban-rural divide issue. I come from a rural riding and the carbon tax is going to make life that much more difficult for the many people who live in my riding who struggle to make ends meet as it is, who struggle to pay the rent at the end of the month, who struggle to get to work.

I am especially pleased to be responding to this throne speech.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, in August, the chief of police for the city of Toronto shared the shocking news that over 300 people accused of firearms charges were walking free on bail, free to terrorize the GTA. Criminals know the punishment does not fit the crime. They know they have a long list of rights and their victims have none.
