Environment committee  In terms of the supplementary estimates (C), there's an amount of $2.1 million in new funding, for example, for Rouge Park, and $1.8 million—

Environment committee  The $3.9 million is mostly related to consultation and streamlining of our professional, technical, and policy capacity within Parks Canada, and also in terms of aligning our period of operation to the period of highest visitation.

Environment committee  It would be, for example, our visitor activities, our visitor services, and also our conservation and internal services. It's across all of our program activities at Parks Canada.

Environment committee  Yes, we can.

Environment committee  Yes. In Parks Canada's supplementary estimates, for example, we have $797,000 this year for marine, and it is to advance our work on marine conservation areas in Lancaster Sound and the southern Strait of Georgia in British Columbia.

Environment committee  It's 29, yes.

Environment committee  I think there are a few. Expanding the parks system is one. There are very few opportunities for public servants to do something that is there forever. If I look at the Nahanni expansion as an example—and I had a chance to work directly with the grand chief of the Deh Cho at that time—that is an exceptional accomplishment for Canada.

Environment committee  We obviously look at other people's experiences, be it in terms of conservation, visitor experience or education. Innovations have been made in all components of Parks Canada, but we also learn from others. We look at what is happening in the market—for instance, when it comes to communicating messages and various ways to do that.

Environment committee  For 100 years, Parks Canada has been using various approaches. An evolution has been taking place over time. Nowadays, technology provides us with new opportunities in some cases. Our objective is to ensure that each activity Parks Canada puts forward meets both the objective of conservation and of presentation.

Environment committee  Interactions happen at all levels. Different strategies have been used over the years. We have various sites that have had interpretation issues in some form or another.That has been a reality at Parks Canada for almost 100 years.

Environment committee  Parks Canada does not operate in a vacuum. That agency looks at what is happening at museums or other institutions whose mandate is similar to its own to learn about new technologies and communication approaches, while taking into account its own financial reality.

Environment committee  It is a real pleasure to appear before the committee to discuss my appointment as chief executive officer at Parks Canada. I will give some very brief remarks and after my remarks it will be a pleasure to answer any questions you may have. I will give you a bit of an overview of my career in the public service of Canada.

Environment committee  Thank you. On the Species at Risk Act, we are taking concrete action. If you look at Grasslands National Park, we have reintroduced the black-footed ferret and the bison, so clear, concrete actions are being taken that will see significant improvements in those species in the near future.
