In particular, they concern evaluation and annual financial accountability. The annual report now even includes accountability for roadmap activities. As you have no doubt noticed, a number of passages refer to roadmap initiatives.

Official Languages committee  We are examining the court challenges program with a view to completely restoring it. It included a language rights component, and so the idea is to restore it to something closer to its original mandate. Work is progressing on this issue. Announcements will be made by the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Canadian Heritage at the appropriate time.

We are currently focusing on those aspects, but we are aware of this issue.

Official Languages committee  I can add a few comments on this. It is well understood by all parties concerned that there are big challenges to be resolved. Nobody has a magic solution. That's one thing to say, for starters. It's going to be a challenge, and this is known by everybody—departmental, community organizations, and everybody else.

Official Languages committee  As I was saying earlier, we provide second-language learning support to the provinces, mainly through immersion programs, which are very popular. We know that quite a lot of young people today are learning the second language. The latest official figures peg that number at 340,000, and it's on the rise, according to our most recent data.

Official Languages committee  The bulk of those efforts will come from our colleagues at the Department of Justice and from the people at the Canadian Judicial Council, who participate in judicial appointments. We are familiar with the report and following the issue. It's one of the things we talk about with our counterparts at the Department of Justice, in order to stay on top of official languages trends and progress, overall.
