Agriculture committee  Thank you for doing my job, Mr. Anderson. Mr. Atamanenko.

May 11th, 2006Committee meeting

The ChairConservative

Agriculture committee  I have just a very quick question, and forgive me if I don't understand this. That's why I'm asking the question. As it stands now, if it's over 85% it's classed not as a dairy product but as a protein, and that's where the crux of the problem is. What if this were classed as a dairy product?

Agriculture committee  To follow up on this, if that decision wasn't made, then we wouldn't be having the problem. Is that right?

Agriculture committee  I don't have a lot of questions. The ultimate goal is how to ensure our producers keep making money. That's the key within the system--to determine how we can ensure that your industry is able to survive and make some profit. I guess that's the overall goal. Here is my first question: do you feel the government has a role here to do something, whether it's to limit the MPIs coming in or to somehow redirect our industry?

Agriculture committee  His wife is about to have a baby on Saturday, ladies and gentlemen, so we have one meeting with Jean-François, and then we'll be switching clerks. We wish you and your wife all the best. I hope everything works out well. Mr. Atamanenko.

Agriculture committee  We will be getting the agenda ahead of time. Is that what normally happens?

Agriculture committee  We all have votes that evening so we should all be here. If we do something at 4 o'clock, does that work? Mr. Atamanenko, is that fine with you? Okay. We'll get back to you with a place on that. So we'll have a steering committee meeting at 4 o'clock, and then we'll report back to the main committee here on Tuesday morning of next week.

Agriculture committee  That subcommittee will be comprised of me, Mr. Steckle, Mr. Bellavance, and Mr. Atamanenko. Good. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. The last, of course, is always the one we have the most fun discussing—the allocation of time for questioning. We certainly have a myriad of different options available to us.

Agriculture committee  I'm just not sure of what the difference is. This is the main committee, and I'm not sure what you're talking about. Could you give me clarification?

Agriculture committee  Yes. Listening to both sides here, I think we have a big job ahead of us and we need...we can hear from as many people as possible. If we can somehow help in that way, why not do it? Obviously, if it's abused, we should look at it. I would agree with the motion for having two people.

Norad  Mr. Speaker, since 1958 Norad has always been renewed for three to five year periods only. This tradition allowed the Canadian government to regularly reaffirm Canadian sovereignty in our relationship with the world's most militarily powerful state. Does the hon. member consider that the Conservatives now wish to make Norad a permanent organization to sacrifice the opportunity to reaffirm Canadian sovereignty in the future?

Darfur  Mr. Chair, I have a question for the hon. minister. Canada used to spend $9 out of every $10 for peacekeeping. That figure has dropped to about 33¢ out of every $10 we spend, outside of the country. Given the fact that we only have so many troops, as was alluded to, does she think that maybe it is time now to redefine our role outside of our country as far as troop deployment goes?

Request for Emergency Debate  Mr. Speaker, I would like to ask for an emergency debate as set out in sections three and four of Standing Order 52. The current crisis facing Canadian farmers deals with the lack of immediate emergency funding they require to enable spring planting. With no commitment forthcoming from the government, they are unable to get loan guarantees to purchase the necessary seeds to get their crops into the ground and thus remain viable.
