Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner's Report  Mr. Speaker, it is an amazing day when we hear the opposition asking that we please stop debating something because they want to vote on it. Why would they bring forward a motion unless they wanted a healthy debate? Part of that debate, at least to me, is what the opposition parties deem to be more important than the priorities of the government, the very serious issues facing the people of Canada, and what they want to see us in here talking about.

Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner's Report  Mr. Speaker, my question goes back to a point that was raised earlier about the relevance of what my colleague was talking about. What he talked about in his speech was entirely germane to the discussion. This is what we are faced with. This government has proposed a progressive budget that Canadians are responding well to and the only response to that from the opposition is to attack the Prime Minister or members of cabinet personally, as we have seen them do for a couple of years now.

Budget Implementation Act, 2018, No. 1  Mr. Speaker, with respect to the last question, it is all about how we do the math. What the Conservatives are not doing is not considering that there is a child benefit that people are getting back. Members are not including that in their math. They are also not talking about the fact that we are lowering the corporate tax rate to 9%.

An Act in Relation to Firearms  Mr. Speaker, I want to start by saying that one of the reasons I believe moving time allocation was necessary, and I was not part of making that decision, was that there were antics being put forth by the opposition repeatedly to shut down debate on this. This is the only way we have been able to force an actual debate to happen.

An Act in Relation to Firearms  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for her intervention today on this important bill. I, too, see it as the right step in the right direction both to secure the opportunities for responsible gun owners to continue to participate in their sport and to strengthen our laws as they relate to guns and people getting access to guns.

An Act in Relation to Firearms  Mr. Speaker, my colleague from Eglinton—Lawrence has highlighted exactly what this legislation is about. It is about a sensible approach to making sure that responsible gun owners can continue to participate in the activities that they do and at the same time make it safer for Canadians, and in particular as I see it, younger Canadians.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I have been listening to the comments by both the NDP members and the Conservatives this afternoon. Both have spoken very highly of the committee, its ability to do its work, and its ability to make sure that it does the proper research and investigation in dealing with things.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I come back to what I was talking about earlier on with this being a slippery slope. When we start ordering the Prime Minister to tell people to appear before committee, professional public service employees that we have, where does it end? Do we then start telling others to appear next week, if we question their judgment and question their input?

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague for his insight on this matter. At the end of the day, one of the most important things for the function of the government, or the House, for that matter, is our ability to have the utmost faith in our public servants. As the member for Winnipeg North said earlier, once we start to allow the House, through the direction of the Prime Minister, to demand that people come before committee, we run the risk of starting to challenge those individuals.

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, I rise today to present a petition. This petition garnered over 8,000 signatures, a grassroots petition that started in my community but reached out to all provinces and territories throughout the country. The petitioners call on the Government of Canada to implement a federal law, a pan-Canadian universal pharmacare plan, within this 42nd Parliament; and implement a national formulary for medically necessary drugs, including a drug monitoring agency, providing regulations and oversight for protecting Canadians.

World Down Syndrome Day  Mr. Speaker, World Down Syndrome Day happens annually on the 21st day of the third month of every year. This date was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome. Today is a day to raise awareness of the vital role that people with Down syndrome play in enriching our lives and communities.

The Budget  Madam Speaker, my colleague touched on a whole host of issues, but the one I will focus on is pharmacare. He and the NDP are concerned that what the government has proposed with respect to pharmacare is not enough. I question how they would be able to do more, while at the same time balancing a budget, which is what they committed to do during the election.

The Budget  Mr. Speaker, unfortunately, as a member of the defence committee, I could not disagree any more than humanly possible with the comments I have heard from the other side of the aisle, particularly as it relates to the latter part of the member's speech. The truth of the matter is that this government has put forward a very ambitious and aggressive plan, “Strong, Secure, Engaged”.

The Budget  Mr. Speaker, the member talked about seniors. I would like him to talk more about them, given the fact that seniors are growing in numbers. Baby boomers are continuing to retire and we see the need to provide these services in advance for seniors. Also, the member is so passionate about both of our official languages.
