Judges Act  Morgan's very strong record in the private sector, in the oil and gas industry, as president and CEO of EnCana. He had said some things that raised the ire of a number of the members of the committee. It was no secret at the time that Mr. Morgan was an active fundraiser for the Conservative Party. His appointment went to the committee. The committee did not like the appointment of Mr.

House debate  It states: Canada recognizes the need to continue to involve the Assembly of First Nations in a key and central way for the purpose of achieving a lasting resolution of the IRS legacy, and commits to do so. The Government of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations firmly believe that reconciliation will only be achieved if they continue to work together; When I raised the question in the House I talked about two particular issues.

Competition Act  The increase in the price of crude oil is also driving up the price of gas, which, understandably, has raised the public's ire for the past several years. For a number of years, in fact, old records have fallen repeatedly as the price of regular gas has regularly reached new highs. Fluctuations aside, the price of gas in Quebec is going up steadily; it was 71.3¢ in May 2002, 94.4¢ in May 2004 and $1.10 in May 2007.

Natural Resources committee  Whether that comes from the NRU reactor in Canada, the BR2 reactor in Belgium, the Osiris reactor in France, or the Petten reactor in the Netherlands, it is all the same. I would like to inform you that we were in constant contact with IRE in Belgium, the operators of the Mol facility at BR2. In fact, we wrote them a letter from our president on November 30 imploring them to provide product to Canada. As I mentioned in my testimony, in spite of our constant discussions with them, in spite of imploring them vigorously, we did not receive anything until December 14, two days after the legislation was passed.

Agriculture committee  The experience has been that when we do that we make the same decision at the same time. We also know that in the United States, the IR-4 program is responsible for the majority of submissions for minor uses in the United States compared to Canada. Agriculture Canada is working with IR-4 now, but we're working to try to bring as many of those submissions for minor uses to Canada that are appropriate to Canada.

The Québécois  I could do that and we could have resolutions in this place to recognize the Métis, the Acadians and first nations. Would it raise the ire of some members of Parliament the way this has? I do not think so but I know why this has raised the ire of some members. The legitimate concern of some members is the fear of what it means and the fear of the consequences down the road?

Fisheries committee  There's a huge process that goes on, and there are issues about where the priorities are. Lincoln can expand that, but one of the issues is with respect to IR #2, for example. There is a concern that gravel extraction is now being allowed there, increasing the risk of flooding on IR #2. Because the priorities are placed elsewhere, that's a political decision that's being made.

Budget Implementation Act, 2007  We can also forgive these same experts for going one step further and calling the government's environmental plan a fraud and sellout. As I was saying, the Conservatives have not only raised the ire of the left, but they have turned their backs on their allies on the right. I am talking of course about the energy sector in Alberta and its dissatisfaction with the government's decision to tax income trusts.

Finance committee  Well, first of all, apply GAAR and apply the thin capitalization rules. I'd like to note that in the United States the IRS did apply its anti-avoidance rules against the Canadian income trusts that owned American businesses, so we don't have to be worried about needing to have reciprocity. They taxed us, we tax them; that's the way it works.

Finance committee  Does the Canada Revenue Agency have a limit in terms of time and when they can investigate? The IRS does in the States; they have a three-year limit.

Finance committee  I'm referring now to an article that appeared recently from the United States: ...the Government Accountability Office found that IRS agents are so hobbled by “dilatory tactics” by offshore taxpayers and other problems that it takes almost two and a half years to complete a typical audit. Therefore, they could never meet the deadline.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police  I wish there had been the same type of anger from the member opposite when the former minister of public safety said: —let me reassure everyone in the House that there is no conduct on the part of the commissioner that needs to be investigated. I wish that kind of ire had been directed toward the then minister so we could have had answers then instead of now.
