Official Languages committee  Yes, certainly.

Official Languages committee  We could certainly deal with that, eventually.

Official Languages committee  I believe we do not have to report on that, but if the committee has questions concerning our expenditures, we could provide you with any information that you request.

Official Languages committee  Mr. Nadeau, I would like to mention that the official languages champion recently published a message on our website for all department employees. He encouraged them to do just that, i.e., to communicate in the language of their choice. He indicated that senior management would be fully responsive and happy to receive documents in either English or French.

Transport committee  I'll try to answer the questions as they were posed. In terms of what Canada Post did specifically to ensure a certain level of security of the mail coming into the Vancouver Olympics area, Canada Post would have that information. We, as a department, don't really have the specifics of how they actually conducted that work.

Transport committee  There are a number of reasons for the changes. First of all, our real property budget will increase because we want to purchase land in the Windsor area. In addition, the way in which the department is funded to cover operational costs has changed. Airport leasing charges which were formerly paid directly by airport authorities to the department are now paid directly to the federal government.

Transport committee  I'm sorry, Mr. Chair, but I do not understand the question. We have not reduced Canada Post's budget. It is a self-financed Crown Corporation. However, in its supplementary budget, it did receive an additional sum to handle the extra volume of mail in the region in which the Olympic Games were being held.

Transport committee  You're right.

Transport committee  I could talk about the safety review conducted by Canada Post of each mailbox, of each house laneway and walkway. Canada Post will talk with residents to determine where mailboxes could best be located from a safety standpoint for their employees and of course, for customers. However, some mailboxes have been in the same location for a long time.

Transport committee  The Canada National Parks Act, under the rubric “Public consultation”, reads in subsection 12(1): The Minister shall, where applicable, provide opportunities for public participation at the national, regional and local levels, including participation by aboriginal organizations, bodies established under land claims --etc.

Transport committee  It's certainly quite possible that for the NCC to take on maintenance and ownership of those bridges we'd first have to come up with funds. We all know that bridges are expensive to maintain. If they do that, then the National Capital Commission may have some issues with respect to how they use the existing funding and what priorities they set for themselves, because obviously maintaining a bridge for safety is going to be a top priority all the time.

December 7th, 2009Committee meeting

André Morency

Transport committee  Yes, absolutely. You were asking about funds being asked for through supplementary estimates (B) for the department in support of the Mackenzie gas pipeline project. When this project was being conceived back in 2004-05, the department anticipated an awful lot of growth in the transportation sector in that particular part of the country.
