Justice committee  I could certainly provide you with information that looks at the proportion of youth accused for other types of violent crime, but not if they're gang-related.

Justice committee  Do you mean the exact number?

Justice committee  It is generally true, yes, that crime rates tend to be higher in the western part of Canada and in the north compared with the eastern part of the country.

Justice committee  I can't speak specifically to particular incidents. What I can tell you is that any incident that comes to the attention of police and is substantiated through police investigation is then reported to Statistics Canada and counted within our data.

Justice committee  The slide on page 3 is referring to the number of victims, not the number of persons accused.

Justice committee  Yes, it's the number of victims of gang-related homicides. There were 138 victims in 2008.

Justice committee  In other words, not all homicides are solved by the police and not all homicides result in an accused person being identified.
