Industry committee  I have one further question. Have you come across big bang disruption? It's basically using existing technology and applying it in new and innovative ways so you can actually save money and save processes, etc. A typical example would be diabetics and insulin users. If in Canada, for example, we supplied every insulin user with an insulin pump, we could probably reduce by billions of dollars our health care costs because of the kidney failures and the dialysis that has to go on.

Industry committee  Thank you, Chair, and thank you, folks, for being here. Just listening to all the conversation that's going on, this sort of disruptive technology seems to me to fall into three categories: the base one like the nanotechnology that can be applicable in lots of places, specific products that are developing that will disrupt, and processes.

Industry committee  Thank you. How much time do I have?

Industry committee  Okay. Here is a general question to all of you in terms of this bill being applicable here in Canada, but clearly the Internet doesn't have any borders. What's your opinion in terms of other countries data mining or getting private information that they can distribute—of Canadians?

Industry committee  Thank you. In your opinion, does Bill S-4 reduce the red tape for businesses by giving them access to information necessary to conduct due diligence in a merger or accusation without compromising the privacy of individuals?

Industry committee  Thank you. Ms. Gratton, do you agree that organizations that oversee the activities of such professionals as lawyers and doctors should be able to look into allegations of wrongdoing on the part of their members and protect Canadians against harm from rising misconduct?

Industry committee  Just to give me an idea, how big is the problem in terms of the revenue that you're spending on the investigations and your losses?

Industry committee  So Bill S-4 will actually assist in its current form?

Industry committee  That's wonderful. Thank you. To the credit union folks, you talk about a lot of takeovers and mergers and things such as those. How often do these happen in a year, on average?

Industry committee  Thank you. To the folks from IBC, one trend in the technology industry is data mining. I know that already you have a number of companies that are data mining for the insurance companies such as your folks'. How does this impact them in terms of producing the data you need to make reasonable decisions?

Industry committee  Thank you, Chair. Thank you, witnesses, for being here. This is a very interesting discussion on all of this, particularly with the insurance fraud, etc. To the Insurance Bureau, you're obviously investigating a lot of these criminal activities for preventing fraud. Why don't you let the police investigate these suspected contraventions and let the law engage in fraud suppression?

Industry committee  Okay, thank you. Now for the folks from the Public Guardian and Trustee side, you have a really tough role to play. I think some of the numbers that came up was 1,600 people. Is that the tip of the iceberg or do you think you're covering most of the abuse that's taking place at these financial institutions to people who are not necessarily able to understand what's going on?

Industry committee  Thank you. Ms. Cooper, obviously the Pharmacists Association plays a critical role in almost everybody's life as I don't see anybody who doesn't take medication of some sort. But would you agree that a regulatory body such as the provincial college of pharmacists should have the ability to obtain information to investigate possible wrongdoing by their own members?

Industry committee  Is your organization forward looking in what's happening with the Internet use of prescriptions, and the lack of borders and boundaries relating to that?
