Infrastructure  Mr. Speaker, in my riding of Davenport, the residents are always seeking alternative ways to get around that are affordable, that avoid congested streets, and that minimize their environmental footprint. More bike paths would move residents across our riding and connect them to public transit and the downtown core.

Portugal Day  Mr. Speaker, Love is a fire that burns unseen; A wound that aches yet isn't felt; An alway discontent contentment; A pain that rages without hurting. So wrote one of the most revered of Portugal's poets, a man by the name of Luis de Camoens in one of his most famous poems, Amor é um fogo que arde sem se ver.

Carnation Revolution  Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honour the anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, which took place last month on April 25. The annual commemoration of 25 de Abril, as it is known in the Portuguese community, the largest ethnic group in my riding of Davenport, celebrates the end of almost 40 years of the longest authoritarian government in Western Europe.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, there is a very clear list. It is a very thoughtful list of criteria of who would be eligible for medical assistance in dying. We have put a safeguard in place where two independent medical practitioners would have to give the same opinion. We have done that to help reassure each of those medical practitioners who want to provide the medical assistance in dying that he or she is acting within the scope of the law and consistent with reasonable medical knowledge and skill.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, this is something that very much weighs on me. I want to do a huge communication effort. I felt that there was not an understanding that there was a Supreme Court decision and a law had to be enacted. My objective is to do a series of interviews with a number of local newspapers and radio stations to make sure people are as educated as possible on this issue.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I can understand why there is some confusion. We have reaffirmed our commitment. We made a promise and we continue to be committed to $3 billion over four years for home care. It has not been introduced in the 2016 budget, but we have reconfirmed our commitment to $3 billion over four years.

Criminal Code  Madam Speaker, I rise today to speak to Bill C-14, the medical assistance in dying bill. To me, it is legislation that reflects where society is today. It is the right one for where the majority of Canadians are, and provides a strong foundation on which to build. It recognizes the inherent and equal value of every life, and honours the dignity and autonomy of an eligible person to choose medical assistance in dying under well-defined rules and conditions.

Dance Activities in Canada  Madam Speaker, today on April 22 we mark the beginning of National Dance Week, a across-Canada celebration of dance. The week will culminate on April 29, which is recognized as International Dance Day. Canadians love to dance. We like to see dance. In 2013, there were more than 1.1 million attendees to 2,700 performances by 88 Canadian dance companies.

The Budget  Mr. Speaker, we are indeed investing in our economy, investing in today and investing in tomorrow. In terms of the small business tax, we believe that the investment we are making in terms of the cut to the middle-class taxes and in the Canada child benefit will also benefit our small business owners right across the country.

The Budget  Mr. Speaker, I believe we have taken immediate action on the guaranteed income supplement. It is currently in the budget. We are moving as quickly as possible. We have introduced it, and we are trying to move it through the House as quickly as possible. When it actually reaches our seniors, it is about as immediate and as quick as possible.

The Budget  Mr. Speaker, I will be sharing my time with my colleague, the member for Mississauga East—Cooksville. It is with great pleasure that I stand once again in this venerable House to speak in favour of the budget that our Liberal government introduced last month. As the proud member of Parliament for Davenport, I was pleased to read through the entire budget and to appreciate how it would help the residents in my riding.

Poverty  Mr. Speaker, the child poverty rate in my riding, Davenport, is above the national average. The child poverty rate is very worrisome. It is often said that a just society can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. Can the Minister of Finance share his plan to lower the child poverty rate?

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, I, too, share the same concerns as the hon. member opposite. As I mentioned at the end fo my speech, Bill C-6 is the first step of what I hope will be many more steps to come in reforming our immigration system. Our Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship has been very clear.

Citizenship Act  Madam Speaker, I will answer the question two ways. First, my grandparents came to our country in the 1950s and they had a clear path to citizenship. Therefore, for me, part of the bill is about creating that clear path for citizenship. We are reducing the number of days that people have to be here to become permanent residents, thus be on their way to be a Canadian citizen.
