Indigenous Affairs  Madam Speaker, there is no relationship more important to our government than the one we have with indigenous peoples. Our government is fully committed to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action. This includes developing a reconciliation framework for Canadian heritage and commemoration.

Controlled Drugs and Substances Act  Mr. Speaker, my question back to the member would be this. Over the course of the 10 years when people in Vancouver were trying to establish Insite, a groundbreaking service, where was the party opposite in listening to community voices, public health advocates, and, yes, evidence-based scientists?

Controlled Drugs and Substances Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank my hon. colleague, who has shown incredible leadership. I am delighted to see that he is there to support the Minister of Health on this issue. As has been the case for a good number of issues, our approach has been based on science, evidence and, above all, jurisprudence.

Controlled Drugs and Substances Act  Mr. Speaker, I concur with my hon. colleague that we must do more on this file. This bill is a giant step forward. It ensures we listen to the people on the ground and helps provide greater access to infrastructure and community facilities. I believe this is a big step forward, but we must continue to work with the provinces, territories, and community stakeholders in order to solve what we both recognize is a major problem.

Controlled Drugs and Substances Act  Mr. Speaker, it is an honour for me to rise in the House to show my support for Bill C-37. This bill merits the support of all members of the House. I am particularly pleased that our friends in the New Democratic Party are in support of what is, essentially, a public health measure.

Translation Bureau  Mr. Speaker, here is more good news: last week, the Minister of Public Services and Procurement gave the Translation Bureau the respect it deserves. Following the announcement, Emmanuelle Tremblay, president of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees, said, “On the whole, the minister met our expectations”.

Aerospace Industry  Mr. Speaker, there is more good news for our men and women in uniform. We are committed to providing them with the equipment they need to do the job and to provide good paying jobs in Manitoba and across Canada. Our government is proud to announce the award of contracts, totalling $90 million, for the maintenance and repair of engines for our military.

Public Services and Procurement  Mr. Speaker, I have never seen a minister do so much. She is working hard to solve a problem that we inherited from the previous government. I cannot believe that members across the floor have the nerve to ask us questions about this massive problem they created. The minister has put measures in place and is going to resolve the problem.

Public Services and Procurement  Mr. Speaker, I must tell members that I am little incredulous vis-à-vis a political party that left us a legacy of a failed project that this minister, that this Prime Minister, that this department is working overtime, around the clock, to fix. We will fix the problems in Phoenix.

National Defence  Mr. Speaker, I have great news. Our government is committed to providing the men and women of the military the equipment they need to do their job, while providing well-paying jobs for the middle class and those working hard to join it. That is why yesterday our government announced the award of contracts totalling $168 million to acquire new portable shelter systems for our military.

National Defence  Mr. Speaker, the good news does not stop there. Our government announced its decision to launch an open and transparent competition to replace the entire fleet of CF-18s shortly after the results of the defence review were released. This competitive process will help ensure that the members of the Canadian Armed Forces have the best aircraft for the long term, while getting the best value for money and generating the most economic benefits possible for Canadians.

National Defence  Mr. Speaker, just to prove that good news can be transmitted in both official languages, I just want to tell members that our government announced the decision to undertake an open and transparent competition to replace the full CF-18 fleet shortly following the results of the defence policy review.

Statistics Act  Mr. Speaker, we have certainly had an interesting exchange of views on this important legislation concerning the independence and, indeed, the excellence of Statistics Canada. It reinforces our government's commitment to building data and informing good decisions. I have heard all of the points that the member and some of his colleagues have made.

Statistics Act  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for her speech and for her constructive suggestions. I am sure some of them will be examined. One thing we do not hear a lot coming from our friends across the way is praise for the independent work of Statistics Canada. We do not have to go very far to have a Conservative admit privately that the decision to go to the national household survey and upend our previous long-from census was perhaps something they paid too high a price for, given the outcome of that debate.

Public Services and Procurement  Mr. Speaker, as the member for Gatineau, and like all members of the House, I believe that the problems with the Phoenix pay system are unacceptable, but we are going to solve them. That said, I cannot believe I am hearing this from a member of the very party that left us the problem of the Phoenix pay system.
