Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  Raising taxes is what is demanded by the Liberals and the NDP. Their so-called pollution tax is just another name for a carbon tax. A tax is a tax is a tax. A tax is just a way for socialists to spend our money in a way we would never do voluntarily. We have moved to a position where the federal budget will be balanced by reducing spending, which is what Canadians have told us needs to be done.

Environment  This is equivalent to shutting down 37 coal-fired electricity generation plants, and we are accomplishing this without the Liberal and NDP's $20 billion job-killing carbon tax, which would raise the price of everything.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  The NDP has made, I think it is $56-billion worth of unfunded promises, and so far we know it wants a $20-billion carbon tax. However, as the member knows, we have decreased taxes across the board, whether it is the GST, from 7% to 6% to 5%, small business taxes, or personal taxes. The average family of four now pays $3,400 less federal taxes with this Conservative government compared to before.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  Mr. Speaker, I have looked very carefully at the NDP's plan, its plan on the carbon tax and the plan in terms of how it was going to spend that money. To be frank, it was a myriad and hodgepodge of social programs that the members were going to spend that money on. In contrast, we believe that Canadians work very hard for their money and they need to keep that money in their pockets.

Economic Action Plan 2014 Act, No. 1  Unlike what the inexperienced Liberal leader thinks, budgets do not just balance themselves. Unlike what the reckless New Democrats may hope, a carbon tax on everything depresses GDP and lowers tax revenue. The second way we are tackling the deficit is by making concerted efforts to reduce the size of government through attrition and modernization.

The Environment  Thanks to our actions, carbon emissions will go down by close to 130 megatonnes from what they would have been under the Liberals. We are accomplishing this without the Liberal and NDP carbon tax.

The Environment  What we know is that our approach is working and Canadians do not want a $20 billion carbon tax from the NDP.

The Environment  Our government has also increased the penalties for those found guilty of breaking our environmental laws and provided additional funding for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. We have done this without introducing a carbon tax, which they would have done.

The Economy  The opposition has a very different plan, a plan to tax and spend that would hurt our private sector and destroy good jobs for Canadians. They want to impose a $22-billion carbon tax, raise the GST, and raise business taxes, which would sap Canada of our economic strength. Our government will not allow this to happen. We will continue to lower taxes; we will continue to reduce red tape; and we will promote the Canadian economy around the world.

Finance  Speaker, the Conservative Party recognizes that Canadian families are trying to make ends meet, which is why we have lowered 160 different taxes since we came to power in 2006, giving the average Canadian family over $3,400 a year extra in its pocket at the end of every year, unlike the opposition NDP, which wants to raise taxes and implement a $20-billion carbon tax that would raise taxes on all Canadian families. Instead, what we are doing is taking action to help Canadian families. We are ending pay-to-pay policies so that customers will not have to pay extra to receive paper bills.

Transport committee  On the very first day, we announced a $3-billion to $5-billion investment in the only province in Canada where the federal government owns bridges. We are going to pay for this bridge with tolls. Obviously the NDP relies on the carbon tax to generate $21 billion in new spending money. We, however, prefer to cut taxes, not raise them.
