New Democratic Party of Canada The NDP leader's anti-trade views are in line with his other policy plank, as we have heard, to impose a $20 billion carbon tax on Canadians. His anti-trade views and his long held desire to impose this new multi-billion dollar carbon tax would kill Canadian jobs and stall economic growth.

New Democratic Party of Canada Another former NDP trade critic, the member for Burnaby—New Westminster, summarized his party's views when he said that free trade has cost Canadians dearly. A leopard cannot change its spots and the NDP cannot hide its anti-trade agenda. In challenging global economic times, Canadians know that it is only our government that has a pro-trade plan to generate jobs, growth and long-term prosperity.

International Trade The NDP staffers union joining such a campaign is further proof of the NDP's ideological anti-trade agenda, an agenda that not long ago sent an anti-trade mission to Washington to lobby against Canadian jobs. On the positive side, since forming government, we have concluded a number of trade agreements that are opening new markets for Canadians and creating jobs.

International Trade A 20% increase in trade with the European Union results in jobs. More money in exporters' pockets results in jobs. I knew New Democrats were anti-trade; now I understand they are anti-jobs.

Combatting Counterfeit Products Act They continued after that with their carbon tax of $21 billion on the backs of Canadians, but they do not care about that. They are anti-trade. They are anti-commerce. They are anti-economy. We have here a sound and solid bill that would take care of Canadians. The big stakeholders, such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian food producers, all agree with it.

International Trade Mr. Speaker, it is always great to welcome the NDP back to the trade file. We know it is anti-trade. Its position has been pretty consistent in that. It seldom veers from that. However, we welcome the NDP back. The reality is that we are negotiating a high-quality, 21st-century agreement.

International Trade That is the party that sends its leader into the United States to bash our resource industry and to bad-mouth our economy. The New Democrats have no credibility on trade; they are anti-trade, anti-investment.

International Trade Mr. Speaker, the NDP's anti-trade record is no secret to anyone in the House. In fact, the member for British Columbia Southern Interior has even argued that trade agreements “threaten the very existence of our nation”.

Business of Supply One of the first items of debate I had the experience of participating in was the NDP's anti-trade mission to Washington to lobby against certain energy infrastructure projects. I do not think anyone has really talked in detail today about the cost of capital and how much it actually costs to develop the oil sands.

BUSINESS OF SUPPLY Could he contrast that with some of the ridiculous positions and messages that have been in the media about what other parties, particularly the NDP, have taken on their anti-trade missions?

BUSINESS OF SUPPLY After the meeting, he sends his deputy leader to Washington, who then says “We're trying to present a different face of Canada on this”. We know what that difference face is. It is anti-jobs. It is anti-development. It is anti-trade. The fact is, the NDP cannot be trusted to develop Canada's economy. Mr. Chair, I would like to take a few minutes to talk about the oil sands, which constitute the third largest oil reserves in the world, create jobs and stimulate economic growth across Canada and in all sectors of the Canadian economy.

Business of Supply Our government continues to create the right conditions to enable Canadians and Canadian businesses to feel confident to invest, create jobs, participate in the global marketplace and grow our economy. Compare out actions with the anti-trade policies of the NDP. As even former Liberal finance minister and deputy prime minister John Manley noted: “The current NDP with its current set of priorities, its…views that are pretty much anti-trade, higher taxes, more spending…will not be very welcomed by the Canadian business community.”

International Trade Sadly, the NDP has an appalling record on trade. This is a party whose idea of trade promotion is to lead an anti-trade mission to Washington, D.C., to lobby against Canadian jobs and attack Canada's exporters. Despite the antics of the NDP, our government is delivering for Canadians. Today, Statistics Canada reported that in March, Canada's merchandise exports increased by 5%.

Natural Resources While our government is working to support job creation and economic growth across Canada, the NDP leader and his critics go to Washington to argue against Canadian jobs. We support Canadian workers. The NDP follows its narrow, ideologically-driven, anti-trade, anti-development, anti-resource, anti-job agenda.

International Trade On this side of the House we are going to continue to focus on the priorities of Canadians. Unfortunately, the NDP just does not get it. It is anti-trade and anti-investment. It has no credibility on those issues.
