Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Mr. Speaker, for the last 10 minutes my colleague was talking about the economy. I have to say that I have been listening all day. In one breath the Conservatives are saying we are investing too much in Canadians, and in another they are saying we are not spending enough. They are saying they are the party of compassion.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  I thank my colleague for his speech, Mr. Speaker. It is always interesting to listen to him talk about the economy. However, I would like to draw his attention to the fact that in addition to having rehired everyone who lost their job during the pandemic, which is more than three million people, 400,000 new jobs have been created in the meantime.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, I want to congratulate my colleague on a very well delivered speech. I would expect nothing less from a man of wisdom, one with so many years of experience. He delivered a speech that showed a great deal of concern for Canadians, and I thank him very much for that, as well as for his work and his words.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, I tried to follow my hon. colleague but, at times, I got caught between spending and investing. He is saying we are spending too much. We are investing in our country. That, by itself, is definitely a different approach between our government and the opposition, because we are investing in Canadians.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, my colleague underlined a few very crucial areas that Canadians are concerned about and that our government has moved forward with in the fall economic statement. Various decisions have been taken lately. One is with respect to housing. We brought forward the first national housing strategy, and we are seeing the rapid housing initiative move forward very quickly as well.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, as I said in my speech, immigration is key to the success of our country and to the growth of our country. We have made some changes that would bring more people, skilled workers, to support us. We have the family reunification, which would bring families together, adding family members.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, I thank my colleague for his very important question. Members know that, when the government makes investments, it has to determine where the greatest needs lie. Research has clearly shown that seniors aged 75 and up have a lot more expenses than younger seniors.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, one of the first things we did when we formed government was to add a 1% tax on those most fortunate, and that was a key step forward. That allowed us to bring some revenue in to reduce taxes for the middle class, which was essential. There are very important questions to be asked around banking and the profits of some of the bigger companies.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2022  Madam Speaker, as always, it is a great pleasure for me to rise in the House to talk about the work that the government is doing and the impact it is having in our ridings. Let me share with the House the importance of the fall economic statement. It follows the budget and brings us to the fall.

Veterans' Week  Mr. Speaker, as always, both across the country and in my riding of Sackville—Preston—Chezzetcook, Canadians turned out in large numbers at a variety of commemoration events to recognize our veterans during Veterans' Week. I myself had the opportunity to attend a number of events, both here at home and across the country.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, that question gives me an opportunity to share with the House and with Canadians what the former Conservative government did prior to 2015. It is very important to note that it actually cut the budget on the backs of our men and women who served. In 2014, it closed nine veterans offices that were giving services and supports to veterans across the country.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, there are so many programs and organizations out there helping our veterans. It is quite remarkable, but we should look at what we are going to be studying over the next few weeks or months, the veteran employment strategy. It is exactly in line with many of the organizations that my colleague mentioned that support our veterans.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, that was an important question. My sympathy goes out to the family for their loss of the veteran she mentioned yesterday in her speech. Our government has put forward $150 million to study the data to see how we can best support the survivors of veterans who marry after 60.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his work on the veterans affairs committee, which is very important. I spoke about some of the partners we have on the ground, which are very helpful, and I mentioned Homes for Heroes and tiny homes. This summer I had the opportunity to visit tiny home villages in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.

Committees of the House  Mr. Speaker, I want to thank my colleague for his question and for his outstanding work on the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs. I also want to acknowledge the work we have done to address the situation for francophones, for whom things seemed to take longer. A unit has been dedicated to francophones to ensure that progress is made on their files and that they will not wait longer than anyone else.
