Small Business Week  Mr. Speaker, Small Business Week ends on Saturday, October 24, but I would like to take a moment to highlight the ingenuity and resilience of entrepreneurs across the country and especially those in my riding from Chemin Sainte-Foy to Chemin Saint-Louis, from Boulevard Laurier to Boulevard De la Chaudière, from Route Jean-Gauvin to Rue du Campanile, from Avenue Myrand to Avenue Maguire.

Public Safety  Madam Speaker, I thank my colleague for his question. Stronger gun controls, especially for assault weapons, are particularly important to the Liberal Party of Canada. That is why we brought in a ban on military-style assault weapons, which have no place in our society. That is also why we have invested in the RCMP and our law enforcement agencies.

Public Safety  Madam Speaker, first, I want to offer my sympathies to the family and friends of the victim. While I cannot comment on this specific case, I can tell the House that we trust law enforcement and prosecutors to apply the law to its full extent. We have invested significant resources in law enforcement and intelligence agencies in this country over the last four years and will continue to do so.

Privacy  Madam Speaker, I want to thank the member for her question. I agree that this is a worrisome issue. We must always strive to balance privacy against, in the case of the RCMP, which was also involved with Clearview, the duty to protect Canadians. That is why the RCMP will be working with the Privacy Commissioner to make sure it finds that balance.

The Economy  Madam Speaker, our government is working on a peaceful resolution to the conflict. There has been progress in the past week. There is now one blockade remaining on a Canadian railway near Montreal. We are working very hard. The Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations is currently in British Columbia, where she met with the hereditary chiefs to discuss a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The Economy  Madam Speaker, I share the public's concern and impatience for finding a peaceful resolution to this conflict. That has been our goal from the start. Our priority is dialogue, which is what the provincial premiers also asked for when they met the Prime Minister last week. There is now just one remaining rail blockade in Canada.

Government Priorities  Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague for his question. Obviously, this is a very worrisome situation from the standpoint of the Canadian economy, and our government is working on it. It is worth noting that there have been positive and encouraging new developments. Take, for example, the decision that the RCMP in British Columbia made yesterday to withdraw from Wet'suwet'en territory.

Rail Transportation  Mr. Speaker, we recognize the hardships these blockades have placed on many Canadians across the country and on the economy. However, there is no simple solution to such a complex problem. The premiers of the provinces and the Prime Minister had discussions yesterday. They agreed that we need to have dialogue, but that dialogue has its limits and that is why the blockades must come down.

Rail Transportation  Mr. Speaker, to answer directly the question from the member opposite, it is because we respect the independence of law enforcement in this country, a principle that has been recognized not only by the Supreme Court, but also by former prime minister Stephen Harper and by the former minister of public safety who sits right across the aisle.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, I share my colleague from Portneuf—Jacques-Cartier's concern. The situation for the Canadian economy is deeply concerning. With goods not getting to market and passengers not getting to where they need to be, the impact on the Canadian economy, on Canadian society, is significant.

Rail Transportation  Mr. Speaker, we recognize the hardships that these blockades have caused for millions of Canadians and the Canadian economy. It is our undertaking to see an end to this situation and to see the blockades go down. We are working with the RCMP and with our provincial counterparts who favour the same approach we are taking, which is to give a chance for dialogue.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, I share the concerns of the hon. opposition member. I think the situation is worrisome from the point of view of the economy and the transportation of goods and people. This is having very serious repercussions on the lives of thousands of Canadians and on the Canadian economy.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, the RCMP has it own procedures for dealing with this type of situation, as does the Sûreté du Québec and the Ontario Provincial Police. On May 13, 2015, our hon. colleague, the member for Bellechasse—Les Etchemins—Lévis, said that he had full confidence in the judgment of the RCMP and that he respected the RCMP's operational independence.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, over time, we have become accustomed to the Conservative Party offering simple solutions to extremely complex problems, but I think this is taking things to a whole new level. In this case, we are working with our provincial counterparts. Everyone agrees that dialogue is the way to go to resolve this situation peacefully but that dialogue has its limits.
