Housing  Mr. Speaker, last week we learned that Canadian rents are at an all-time high, averaging $2,200 a month, and it is only going to get worse. The Canadian Federation of Apartment Associations says the new Liberal capital gains tax will discourage construction of new rental homes. The NDP-Liberal government is crushing the prospect of bringing new rental units into our communities.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, the president of the real estate company RE/MAX agrees that the Liberals' spin on their new tax hikes is bogus. I would like to quote him, if I might. He said, “The federal government has been vocal about this...only targeting the wealthiest of the wealthy...it's just not true.”

Petitions  Mr. Speaker, I would like to table my very first petition as member of Parliament for Durham on behalf of my constituents and Canadians across the country who are concerned about rising rates of auto theft. This petition is signed by Canadians who are concerned about Liberal bail policies, Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, and their enabling of repeat offenders to continue committing crimes in our community.

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, on numerous occasions the justice minister has made reference to me as the newest MP here. His government has been in power for nine years, and in those nine years, people's lives have gotten harder, criminals have been allowed to get in and out of courthouses like a turnstile and the minister is continuously putting communities at risk.

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, the justice minister clearly needs to humble himself, admit the Liberal government's mistakes, stop allowing repeat offenders back on the street, and actually keep our neighbourhoods and our communities safe.

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, I will inform him that the Highway 401 car crash made national news because four people were killed, including an infant. Does the minister know that the robbery suspect who caused that car crash was out on bail after being arrested for similar crimes in the past?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, I would like to have a straight-up conversation about some facts. Is the minister aware of the tragic car crash that occurred on Highway 401 in Durham region on April 29?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, is the justice minister aware of the community safety alert issued by the Durham Regional Police on May 10 concerning a high-risk sex offender?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, the community safety alert was issued by the Durham police because this high-risk sex offender poses a serious danger to children. Is the minister aware that the offender was arrested for previous crimes in the past and then released on bail?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, Mr. Redmond was very sadly and tragically beaten to death in Toronto, not far from the minister's home constituency, three months ago. Does the minister know that Mr. Redmond's attackers were previously arrested for similar crimes and then released on bail?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, the condescending tone from the minister, just because I have not been here for very long, does not mean that I do not know what I am talking about. In fact, with these cases in mind, I would like to know if the justice minister is willing to humbly acknowledge that Liberal bail policies are enabling repeat offenders to commit more crimes.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2023  Mr. Speaker, unfortunately, I think our colleague has conflated a couple of things. The carbon tax is not an environmental plan. The carbon tax is a tax plan. We have advocated for, and I am very proud to say this because the riding I represent, Durham, is home to a fantastic nuclear energy facility, is technology and not taxes to respond to environmental concerns across this country.

Fall Economic Statement Implementation Act, 2023  Mr. Speaker, I share the member's concerns about big corporations buying up a bunch of residential properties, being able to control the cost of rents and whether middle-class families can afford a house in this country. The thing I would draw her attention to is that the NDP's partner in the government, the Liberal Party, just approved a merger of Blackstone to purchase Tricon, which would allow an American company to control an insane amount of residential property in Canada.
