Tragedy at Laval Day Care  Mr. Speaker, a horrifying and unprecedented tragedy occurred in my riding. A Société de transport de Laval bus crashed into the Garderie éducative Ste-Rose on Terrasse Dufferin in Laval, killing two young children and seriously injuring six. This is so, so sad, and the children, their families and the day care workers are in my thoughts.

Sarkis Berejikian  Mr. Speaker, today, I want to pay tribute to a man who works in a dying trade: shoe repair. Sarkis Berejikian owns the Cordonnerie Jean‑Pierre II in old Sainte‑Rose, Laval. He is a typical 1970s shoemaker. Mr. Berejikian was born in Syria in 1946. He later moved with his parents to Lebanon, his adopted country, where he trained as a shoemaker.

Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day  Mr. Speaker, for Mullivaikkal, Tamils across the world mourn their loved ones. May 18, 2009, marks the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka. With no peace on the island until this date, over 70,000 Tamils were killed, 300,000 were detained and countless disappeared. Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Mullivaikkal genocide.

Diversity and Inclusion  Madam Speaker, one year ago, our government launched the 50-30 challenge to encourage Canadian organizations to increase diversity and inclusion on corporate boards and in senior management. The challenge has two goals: gender parity, meaning 50% women, on Canadian boards and senior management; and 30% representation of under-represented groups.

Official Languages  Mr. Speaker, as Quebeckers prepare to celebrate their national holiday tomorrow, we can be proud of a federal government that protects and promotes the French language. I am proud that our government has introduced Bill C‑32, which will modernize the Official Languages Act and bring it into the 21st century.

House debate  Madam Speaker, in response to this question, I would like to recall the past of GBA+, recruitment and retention. This year, 2020-21, 493 women signed up, representing 24% of recruits, compared to 1,530 recruits who were men, representing 75.6%. Although recruitment was lower than in the previous year, 2019-20, this percentage of women recruits was the highest of all previous years.

House debate  moved: That: (a) the House recognize that gender-based analysis plus (GBA+) is an analytical process that provides a rigorous methodology for assessing systemic inequalities, as well as a means to determine how diverse groups of women, men, and gender diverse people may experience policies, programs and initiatives; and (b) in the opinion of the House, the government should direct the Department of National Defence to implement GBA+ to meet recruitment and retention targets for under-represented groups.

Agriculture and Agri-Food  Mr. Speaker, it is estimated that more than half of Canada's food supply is wasted annually and that more than $50 billion of that wasted food is avoidable. Reducing waste not only increases food availability, it also saves consumers and businesses money. It strengthens our food systems while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
