November 7th, 2023Committee meeting

Pierre Dalphond

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Since I have only three minutes I would like first to thank the witnesses. I will address my questions to Dr. Shaw. I understand that you have done a lot of research with vulnerable people. You wrote an article called “Perceptions and Experiences of Medical Assistance in Dying Among Illicit Substance Users and People Living in Poverty”.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. I also thank our guests this morning. My questions are for the representatives of the Barreau du Québec. A special thanks to you for participating in our work. We always benefit from the Barreau du Québec's participation. I think that the Barreau du Québec was involved in the Truchon and Gladu cases before the Quebec Superior Court.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you. My questions are for Dr. Lussier. As I understand it, in your view, if we adopt a system that permits advance directives, a diagnosis must be made and an incurable disease must exist. There has to be a finding.

Senator Pierre Dalphond

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. My questions are for Dr. Downar and Dr. Dechêne. We've talked about the fact that 98% of those who have had access to MAiD were receiving palliative care. We also spoke of the lack of resources related to access to palliative care. Would you say that individuals who have access to palliative home care are less likely to choose MAiD than those who don't?

September 27th, 2022Committee meeting

Pierre Dalphond

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Ms. Chandler, you are an expert not only on law, but also on ethical and political issues. My question is about framing, as there are some concerns about that. For instance, there is a concern that the standards will not be applied in the same way from region to region or from province to province.

Pierre Dalphond

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Thank you to our panellists. I think this is very important, and your testimony is very important. My question is for Mr. Leblond. As you have heard, the dilemma we always face is that some groups may be disadvantaged by the system. This makes the options available to them less attractive than the ones you've experienced.

May 16th, 2022Committee meeting

Pierre Dalphond

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. My question is for both the health and justice officials. It's about policy. In Canada, there is significant support for allowing advance directives for medical assistance in dying. In fact, it was a recommendation made by the Senate, as well as a previous joint committee in 2016.

Medical Assistance in Dying committee  Madam Joint Clerk, I'd like to nominate Senator Yonah Martin.
