Carbon Pricing  Mr. Speaker, it is the government's failed policies that have doubled the cost of housing. We would cut the carbon tax and allow families like Edith's to afford to pay for groceries. After nine years, the NDP-Liberal Prime Minister is not worth the hunger or the homelessness. According to the Salvation Army, 26% of Canadians are skipping or reducing their meals because they cannot afford to buy groceries, and one in four Canadians is skipping meals so they can afford for their children to have food.

Protection against Extortion Act  Madam Speaker, after listening to the debate today and the first session of it as well, I am quite disappointed in hearing that the NDP and the Liberals will not be supporting tougher penalties for such serious crimes as extortion. The fact is that after nine years, backward, soft-on-crime Liberal policies have resulted in a full-blown crisis across Canada.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, I know we have all heard the horror stories about how bad auto theft has gotten in this country after nine years of the NDP-Liberal government's soft-on-crime policies. Now, we have reports coming out of Toronto that a good Samaritan had pulled over to help somebody in medical distress and, while he was helping them, his car was stolen.

Protection Against Extortion Act  Mr. Speaker, it is nice to say that we all need to come together to find a solution, but the fact is that the member is part of the government that brought in Bill C-75 and Bill C-5, which make it easier for violent criminals to get back out onto the streets and terrorize the same communities they come from.

Protection Against Extortion Act  Mr. Speaker, the fact of the matter is that, since the government has been in power, over the last nine years, and the NDP member and the NDP-Liberal government have brought in these soft-on-crime policies, crime has gone up. Every statistic across the country on violent crime has gone up.

Protection Against Extortion Act  Mr. Speaker, my colleague is right, we have to take the side of victims right across the country. I continue to meet with so many victims who are just lost for words. What can they do to protect their families? Many of them are new Canadians who came to this country expecting a better future, and they feel that they cannot do anything.

Protection Against Extortion Act  moved that Bill C-381, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (extortion), be read the second time and referred to a committee. Mr. Speaker, crime is wreaking havoc in our neighbourhoods and communities right across this country. We see extraordinary crime statistics in almost every single category.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, after eight years of the NDP-Liberal government's soft-on-crime policies, more and more Canadians are becoming victims of violent crime right across the country. The Toronto Star reports that carjackings have more than doubled so far in 2024, and break and enters for the purpose of car theft have already exceeded the total number for all of last year.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, what the Liberals did was bring in Bill C-5 and Bill C-75, which allow these same criminals to quickly get bail and be out on the streets, sometimes on the same day. As a result, small businesses across the country are not only dealing with higher taxes, like the carbon tax that the Liberals brought forward, but are now having to pay for extra security to protect their businesses and their families from property theft, organized crime, extortion, shootings and arson.

Protection Against Extortion Act  moved for leave to introduce Bill C-381, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (extortion). Madam Speaker, with the Liberals' soft-on-crime policies, violent crime has risen to an unprecedented level across the country, including extortion. Businesses are being extorted at the highest levels we have ever seen.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, after eight years of the Prime Minister, car thefts have skyrocketed across the country. They are up 300% in Toronto and up over 100% in other Canadian cities. Car theft now costs the insurance industry over $1 billion a year. That means that every Canadian is spending more every month for their insurance premiums.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, while the Liberals continue to hold meetings, criminals are going to continue to steal cars. After eight years of the NDP-Liberal soft-on-crime policies, our police forces are powerless to stop car thieves. Liberal Bill C-5 allows house arrest for these criminals and Bill C-75 allows repeat offenders to be released on bail just hours after they were arrested.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, we have already proposed ideas for legislation that would bring in mandatory minimums for those who have committed car theft for a third time. Currently under the Liberals, the minimum sentence is only six months. Our proposal would bring it up to three years. We are going to get tough on criminals and make streets safer for Canadians.

Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, the member wants to talk about stats. Here are some stats: Violent crime is up by 39% since the Liberals have been in government for the last eight years. Gang-related homicides are up 108% since they have been in government, and violent gun crime has increased. Murders are up, and yes, car thefts are also up.
