Finance committee  Thank you. There are a number of issues we find with graduate students. One is the increasing global competitiveness. We are seeing that universities in other parts of the world--India, China--are able to retain their own graduates and then have their students engage in post-secondary education.

I was going to take the opportunity today to speak with you on innovation and productivity from the point of view of both a university and a region where universities are key to R and D performance. Here, unlike in the rest of Canada, universities perform 65% of the research and development, while industry performs about one-third of the national average, at 18%.
