Fisheries committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. I thank Mr. Johns for bringing that up. As I mentioned in my intervention a moment ago, seal predation is a concern on all coasts. It seems to be highlighted on the east and west coasts, because they have a recognized seal harvest with the Inuit.

Fisheries committee  Can I move an amendment right now? I wish to add “to coordinate the necessary witnesses including Métis, Inuit and first nations communities”. Would that be the place? Maybe the clerk can help in terms of where we can add that, so it's in the motion.

Business of Supply  As I mentioned Tuesday night, we have invested in and are inspired by the work of Val Napoleon and John Burrows at the Indigenous Law Lodge at UVIC. They will be able to do the research on the laws of many nations, so they are able to create a governance structures and constitutions in keeping with their laws.

Procedure and House Affairs committee  I have a couple of quick points, Madam Chair. We've been dealing with this now for the better part of a month—since this committee has been constituted—and I still have not been able to reconcile the fact that here we are, as members of Parliament, effectively voting ourselves an increase when that is not the normal practice.

Procedure and House Affairs committee  Thank you, Mr. Patrice. Good morning, Madam Chair and committee members. I am accompanied today by Duncan Retson, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, and Jennifer Garrett, director general responsible for the Centre Block program at Public Services and Procurement Canada. We have been asked today to provide an update on the long-term vision and plan with a focus on the Centre Block program and Block 2 redevelopment.

The Economy  I want to particularly thank the wonderful team of staff and volunteers who supported my campaign, people like Erica, Gale, Tom, Epiphany, Eleanor, John and so many others who worked so hard. I would like to say a special thanks to my good friends Scott Parker and Megan Rich for being such incredible supports for me and for our campaign.

An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families  The sixties scoop was a deliberate federal policy to take children far way from their identity and to basically turn them into white children. In the book on residential schools by John Milloy, he writes: Fostering was seen as a most effective method of breaking through the welfare bottleneck and ultimately, in tandem with integration, of closing [the residential] schools....

Indigenous Languages Act  Mr. Speaker, at the start I would like to acknowledge that this House rests on the ancestral lands of the Algonquin people. It just occurred to me, in listening to the discussion here, that we do not only have the tragedy of the disappearing of our languages. My ancestors came to Newfoundland around 1610 and had friendly relations with the Beothuk.

Industry committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Esteemed committee members, thank you for the opportunity to be here on the occasion of the tabling of the main estimates for the 2019-20 fiscal year. Science research and evidence-based decision-making matter. They matter more than ever as the voices that seek to undermine science, evidence and fact continue to grow.

Indigenous Languages Act  Mr. Speaker, it is always a pleasure to hear the hon. member for Nunavut speak in this place. I do not know if the member for Yukon was asking about all the amendments. I do not think it is appropriate for me to speak specifically to the call for amendments by the head of the ITK or by the member for Nunavut.

Indigenous Languages Act  Mr. Speaker, I would like to commend both members for speaking indigenous languages. I hope that one day very soon, on my retirement from this place, I too can pursue those languages in my homeland. It is a great privilege to learn those languages. Does the member support, and is he willing to speak to his fellows on that side of the House about supporting, amendments that have been brought forward by a number of members in this place on behalf of witnesses who appeared before committee and indigenous people who wrote to the government?

Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act  Madam Speaker, I wish to focus my comments on the first part of Bill C-88, the amendments to the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act. However, I cannot resist adding that contrary to the remarks the hon. member just made, it was the Harper government that took the power away from the National Energy Board to make the final decision of nay or yea for a pipeline and gave it to the cabinet, so the statement lacks a certain level of credibility.

Business of Supply  Nearly 20,000 kilometres of fibre network has already been installed or is in the process of being installed. This is equivalent to the distance from St. John's to Vancouver through Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Labrador City and back to St. John's. Further, individual Canadians will feel the impact of improvements in the services delivered to their homes.

First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families Act  [Member spoke in Cree] Mr. Speaker, I am from Red Pheasant First Nation, which is a Cree community in Saskatchewan, and I am very proud of that. I remember when I first rose in the House on December 8, 2015, for my maiden speech. I talked about child and family services because it was such an important issue to the people of Manitoba and especially the people of Winnipeg Centre.
