Famine In North Korea February 5th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to note the member's question. We will look into the matter and get back to her as soon as possible.

Drug Trafficking February 5th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, the objective was to meet the governments of the four Andean countries to discuss the foreign ministers' drug dialogue which was launched by our minister last month in Jamaica.

The visit was well received by all. They appreciate Canada's holistic approach to drugs and see them as a major problem in development, health and trade. One official I met said that drugs kill not only people but also institutions.

As the member has indicated, it is an extremely important problem for all of us in the Americas.

Supply December 1st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member is a doctor and a member of parliament. I think it is correct that about $80 billion is being spent on health care from various sources across the country and about $250 million is being spent on medical research.

How much stress would the hon. member put on increasing assistance to medical research to help the health care system generally?

Foreign Affairs November 30th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, Canada is pleased by the commitment made in Paris by the countries concerned to comply with the ceasefire agreement.

We are very concerned about allegations of an alliance between the former FAR and Interahamwe, which are responsible for the 1994 genocide, and the Kabila government.

Canada hopes that all the parties to the conflict will continue the talks and will immediately comply with a ceasefire.

Foreign Affairs November 18th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, in all three countries I pursued co-operation on combating drug trafficking and organized crime, promoting trade and investments, and negotiating a free trade area of the Americas.

In Trinidad I participated in the launch of a Canadian trade and investment mission. In Guyana and Suriname I met with their presidents to discuss these and other subjects.

In short, I believe it was a useful trip for both Canadians and the residents of the three countries. I thank my hon. friend for the question.

Criminal Code November 4th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I seek unanimous consent for me to ask a short question of the member.

Privilege October 6th, 1998

No, Mr. Speaker, it is separate. The House can do anything it wishes by unanimous consent. I would ask for unanimous consent to table the letter in the House.
