Statements in the House

Petitions May 4th, 1995

Madam Speaker, I have two petitions from citizens in my riding.

The first asks that Parliament act immediately to extend protection to the unborn child by amending the Criminal Code to extend the same protection enjoyed by born human beings to unborn human beings.

I support that petition.

Petitions May 3rd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I have a second petition from the citizens of my riding who request that Parliament not amend the human rights code, the Canadian Human Rights Act, or the charter of rights and freedoms in any way which would tend to indicate societal approval of same sex relationships.

Petitions May 3rd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I have a petition from the citizens of Leeds-Grenville who request that the current proposed federal gun control measures be withdrawn and that they be replaced with measures which deal directly with criminal offenders.

Income Tax Act April 24th, 1995

It is pretty safe for the Reform Party to say that.

Motion No. M-5 April 24th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I wish to seek the consent of the House to withdraw Motion No. M-5. It is my motion in Private Members' Business and it deals with the issue of excise taxes on ethanol.

In December the government introduced legislation which will handle that situation to my satisfaction. The new ethanol program that deals with the issue was put forward then and further debate is not required now.

(Order discharged and motion withdrawn.)

Generic Drugs March 29th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, residents of my riding of Leeds-Grenville have expressed grave concern about skyrocketing health costs.

Approximately 40 people from the community of Merrickville have signed a letter to me indicating their support for an increased availability of generic drugs as one way of reducing health care costs.

It has been estimated that Canadians now have 36 per cent of their prescriptions filled with generic drugs. On average, generic drugs are 40 to 50 per cent less expensive. This saving is achieved without compromising the quality of health care.

The greatest concern of seniors in today's economy is that they will not be able to afford proper health care when they get sick.

Citizens of my riding are asking the drug manufacturers to respond to dwindling resources in health care by putting more prescribed drugs on the generic drug list.

Petitions March 28th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions calling on the government not to amend the human rights code in any way which would tend to indicate societal approval of same sex relationships or homosexuality.

I am pleased to present these two petitions on behalf of my constituents.

Petitions February 27th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the next petition may be a little redundant, but perhaps the minister can accept it as encouragement to move on. Its petitioners express concern at the recent court decision allowing extreme drunkenness as a defence against serious crime.

I also support that petition and support the minister in his efforts to look after that major problem in our legal system.

Petitions February 27th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I have three petitions. Two are on the same topic, asking that the privileges which society accords to heterosexual couples not be extended to same sex relationships.

I personally am pleased to support those petitioners.

Petitions February 16th, 1995

Madam Speaker I have petition with 1,826 signatures. It is a rather interesting petition. It was the inspiration of a Mrs. Ruby Stone who lives in my riding.

She is petitioning the government as all these people are against the introduction of a $2 coin. Some of us may not be aware that there is a study going on in this country to introduce a $2 coin. Sometimes these things are slipped in. I know this government would not likely do that.

I think we should introduce more $2 bills because if you use a $5 bill you usually get four coins back. People are getting tired carrying them around. I support these petitioners.
