Mr. Speaker, families in Calgary Northeast want our government to do whatever it takes to pass tough-on-crime legislation.

The Liberals routinely stall Conservative attempts to pass tough-on-crime laws, insulting Canadian victims and their families. Enough is enough. Canadians want action.

Families in Calgary Northeast are fed up with the Liberals and their lack of compassion for victims and their families. I call on the Liberals to wake up and to support Conservative tough-on-crime legislation. This is the very least that families and victims in Calgary Northeast deserve.

I want to thank Police Inspector Kevan Stuart for his past service to Calgary Northeast, and I also want to recognize and welcome his replacement, Inspector David Kotowski. I know that Calgary Northeast will continue to be well served by our brave men and women of the Calgary Police Service.

Mr. Speaker, while our Conservative government has a real plan for the economy that includes lower taxes, the Liberal leader has only one idea. What is it? He complains that Canadians are not paying enough taxes. This is discredited tax and spend and tax again liberalism. Let me quote the Liberal leader, “We will have to raise taxes”. What taxes? How much? When? The sky is the limit.

Could the government please inform the House what the IMF said just last week about our economic leadership?

Mr. Speaker, the Minister of the Environment has just returned from a series of successful meetings with the G8 in Italy and in Washington for the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate.

Could the minister please explain to the House how this government is succeeding in developing a real climate change plan, unlike the former Liberal government that recklessly signed Kyoto and allowed our emissions to grow by 35%, damaging Canada's reputation as a responsible environmental steward?

Mr. Speaker, only hours ago the Minister of the Environment made an announcement relating to the automotive industry that advances both our industrial and environmental agendas.

Today, 27% of Canada's carbon emissions come from transportation. Can the minister advise the House on how he intends to regulate those emissions?

Madam Speaker, it seems like my friend from the other side has widely and thoroughly studied the bill. As the member knows, the industry has responded and provincial and territorial governments are in support of the bill.

Could the hon. member tell me whether we can count on his support to make the bill effective?

[National Defence, March 10th, 2009]

Mr. Speaker, for years under Liberal governments the Canadian Forces suffered from a lack of financial support for essential equipment and support systems that our men and women in uniform require.

Yesterday our government continued with our agenda to strengthen the Canadian Forces with measures that will also help 250 highly skilled General Dynamics workers in Calgary.

Could the Minister of Public Works please inform the House of the important national defence contracts that were announced yesterday?

[Business of Supply, March 10th, 2009]

Madam Speaker, we all understand that our businesses are going through tough times. That includes the forestry industry as well.

Members know that the community adjustment fund announced in our economic action plan has been well received by workers, families and communities across Canada. The NDP and the Bloc obviously decided to vote against it, even without reading the document.

I would like to share with the House some of the feedback on the community development trust, and I would like the member's feedback on it.

After the Prime Minister announced the community development trust, the Premier of B.C. said:

The federal government has made a commitment to workers across the country.... I can tell you, it's an important step. It's an important step in building partnerships. It's an important step for workers.

[Guyanese Community, February 12th, 2009]

Mr. Speaker, in my riding of Calgary Northeast we are blessed with incredible cultural diversity and strong community-minded organizations.

Today I want to officially congratulate the Guyana Canada Cultural Association of Calgary on the purchase of its new building in Calgary Northeast. Led by President Percy Mootoo and his dedicated team, the association gives back to the community through volunteer work, financial contributions to worthy causes, and bursaries for students pursuing higher learning. I congratulate Mr. Mootoo and the association for leading by example.

I also congratulate the Guyanese community in Calgary, throughout Canada, and around the world on the celebration of Guyana's upcoming 39th Republic Day on February 23rd. The history of our two countries, our multicultural diversity, and our friendly and ever-strengthening bilateral relations are all reasons to be proud of our relationship, to celebrate, and to be hopeful for an even brighter future.

Madam Speaker, as the Minister of Finance and his colleagues have conducted extensive and inclusive prebudget consultations in the past six weeks, could the hon. member tell me how closely this budget aligns with what he heard during his prebudget consultations?

[Visit of the Aga Khan, November 24th, 2008]

Mr. Speaker, first I would like to thank God and my deceased parents with whose blessings I am here today. I would also like to thank my wife, Neetu, and my children, Jatin, Chetan, and Arisha, who support me in all I do. Finally I must acknowledge and thank the constituents of Calgary Northeast, who elected me to represent them in the House of Commons.

My riding includes many members of Canada's Ismaili community, who were pleased to welcome their spiritual leader, the Aga Khan, to our city yesterday as part of his cross-Canada tour. This afternoon up to 14,000 Ismailis are expected to attend a gathering in Calgary, and nearly 50,000 Ismailis attended the gathering in Toronto last weekend.

His Highness the Aga Khan praised Canada for its commitment to pluralism and human rights, values that are shared by the Conservative government. That is why we teamed up with the Aga Khan to build the global centre for pluralism.

On behalf of the Conservative Party, I would like to welcome the Aga Khan to Canada and wish him the best of success for the remainder of his visit.
