Statements in the House

Leader of the New Democratic Party February 7th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, as the member for Calgary Centre, I know a thing or two about blizzards, and I sympathize with Canadians from Quebec and Ontario who are facing a record snowfall and blizzard tomorrow.

When we face this type of winter weather, Canadians show their resilience by coming together, staying warm and beating the elements. Of course to keep their homes warm, they need electricity and gas. If the NDP leader gets his way, it will cost Canadians more to heat their homes and stock up on groceries. The NDP leader's $20 billion job-killing carbon tax would make it more expensive to beat the cold.

While the leader of the NDP is on the side of old man winter, our Conservative government will stand against and defend Canadians from the $20 billion job-killing carbon tax.

New Democratic Party of Canada January 30th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, everyone has heard the old saying “don't talk the talk unless you can walk the walk”. Unfortunately, I do not think the New Democrats truly understand the meaning of this statement. In fact, yesterday the Speaker had to put the NDP member for Timmins—James Bay in his place for using unparliamentary language, while the NDP ironically tabled a motion to improve House decorum. Better yet, this motion refers to instances of extreme misrepresentation of facts or position in the House.

Canadians are rightly worried about the New Democrats' misrepresentation of facts and positions. After all, the NDP is the party that has a $21 billion carbon tax in its policy documents, in black and white, and yet its members spent the fall denying it here in the House. We will continue to expose the NDP's $21 billion carbon tax that would raise the price of everything, including—

Calgary Centre January 29th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I want to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the voters of Calgary Centre for electing me to represent them in Canada's Parliament. I am tremendously grateful for their support and I am determined to represent every constituent in my riding to the best of my ability.

I would also like to thank the members from Papineau, Ottawa South and Outremont for their contributions to my success, however inadvertent.

I am honoured to represent the heart of the new west at this pivotal moment in Canada's history, when our nation is poised to become a global superpower, thanks in large part to generations of visionaries from Calgary Centre who seized opportunity. Not only have they built an industry that is providing jobs from coast to coast to coast, but they have also inspired folks in every region to seize their own opportunities for resource development.

This is our national dream for the 21st century and I look forward to working with all members of the House to achieve our destiny.

Rail Transportation December 12th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, yesterday our government delivered on one of its commitments and tabled the fair rail freight service bill.

This fulfills a key commitment following the recommendations that were made by the rail freight service review panel. This bill gives companies that ship goods by rail the right to a service agreement with the railways.

Can the Minister of State for Transport update the House on this important announcement?
