Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  First, in terms of Colombia, 82% of Colombians support the government of President Santos. Only 6% of Colombians voted for anti-trade candidates in the last election. The Colombian people support free trade. Second, the murders that he is referring to have often been committed by FARC, his ideological soulmates, and by drug traffickers.

International Trade committee  I would just note that on the movement, this last election saw an increase in anti-trade members of Congress. I think it's really going to take more of the Wheat Board and others going around pointing out what's happened for the American people to move. But rest assured they will.

Canada-Panama Free Trade Act  However, a hoist motion effectively kills the bill. It does not just set it aside for a period of time. As anti-trade as that group is, I do not understand why those members would want to kill the bill.

Industry committee  Stephenson, could a loan guarantee under which no fees are payable by anyone be perceived as an anti-trade measure?

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  I have never heard them speak this way of any of them. It is quite profound that we are hearing it. Is this not really just about an anti-trade, put-up-the-wall ideology, say whatever the NDP can to make it stick. It has nothing to do with anything factual and simply has to do with what the NDP's ideology, which is to put up walls, to block Canadian trade and to prevent economic growth in our country.

International Trade committee  I think it is important to bring up Stiglitz because some members of this committee have accused witnesses and other MPs of having an anti-trade ideology. I wish to counter that in fact their position in favour of an agreement between Canada and Colombia is an equally ideological position--a so-called pro-trade ideology. But regardless of the strength of some committee members' ideological commitment to a free trade agreement, it is not possible for them to ignore the ethical implications of signing such an agreement with a criminal regime like the one in Colombia.

Tax Conventions Implementation Act, 2010  Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade unionist. A deep-seated anti-trade union culture exists in that country, both within the government and among entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs and the government see autonomous organizations of workers as a threat.

International Trade committee  Isn't there a certain degree of cultural condescension for us in Canada to say that we know better than Colombians whether or not free trade can help them improve their lives? With only 5% supporting anti-trade parties, it seems to me to be a bit sanctimonious and condescending an approach to say as Canadians that Colombians don't have the right to self-governance. They are an independent country.

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  I would like to know of one trade agreement, free trade agreement, any trade agreement, that the New Democratic Party has supported. They do not exist. There is no such thing. The NDP is anti-trade. I do not know how it expects the people in Canada to survive as an exporting nation, to create jobs and opportunities for our people, and I do not know how it expects Colombians to create jobs and opportunities for their people, if we do not trade with one another.

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  In the last session of Parliament, I spoke about the CCFTA and undertook to talk about the lack of environmental protection and labour rights in the agreement, violations of labour rights, violence committed against unionized workers and the anti-trade union atmosphere of Colombia, as well as the murders of trade unionists. These are the norms. At that time, my colleagues and I took note of the fact that Colombia was the most dangerous place in the world for trade unionists.

International Trade  Today, right here in Canada, through these tough economic times, we see and hear history repeating itself. There are calls for anti-trade measures and protectionism. We even hear this from the members opposite. This is not what Canadian business or workers need. Could the Minister of International Trade please inform the House what steps he and this government are taking to stand up against protectionism and to promote free trade for the benefit of all Canadians?

International Trade committee  It's not the same thing in that it's not talking about human rights, but it's the larger constructs in which the debates are taking place. It's not about Canada; it's about anti-trade in the United States. Unfortunately, this has become caught up in some of that.

Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act  Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world to be a trade unionist. A deep seated anti-trade union culture exists in Colombia both within government and among entrepreneurs who see the autonomous organization of workers as a threat. Two thousand, six hundred and ninety trade unionists have been murdered in Colombia since 1986, with 46 deaths in 2008 and so far in 2009 27 murders.

Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement Act  Their words have been eloquent, as well as compelling. I would like to speak to a possible solution. New Democrats are not anti-trade. Trade is good, but the trade we want to see is fair trade. In question period, I have heard the stock answers from the ministers and the Prime Minister to our questions. The Prime Minister as of late has been answering so many questions with the response that it used to be that the NDP stood for something and now it is clear that the NDP stands for nothing.

Forestry Industry  Mr. Speaker, Canadians know the consequences of the NDP's plans for Canada. Its anti-trade policies, its attacks on the energy sector and its plans to tear up the softwood lumber agreement would put Canadian jobs right across this country at risk. There are over 270,000 jobs in the forestry sector and we are protecting them.
