Foreign Affairs  Mr. Speaker, the rules are very clear. They are there to advise and assist Iraqi forces in the northern part of the country.

Foreign Affairs  Speaker, the government's position on these matters since we came to office is unprecedented and has also been clear. Whenever we enter a mission that involves combat, including aerial combat, we present it to the House of Commons for a debate and for a vote. We are proud of that record. We are very proud of the actions undertaken by the Canadian Forces.

Foreign Affairs  The government is examining its next steps. As I have said many times, the government's practice is clear: if there is to be a combat mission, there will be a debate and a vote here in the House of Commons.

Foreign Affairs  Speaker, I am not going to speculate on decisions that have not yet been taken. The government has been clear that we are strongly supportive of the actions undertaken at the initiative of President Obama and our ally to deal with the threat presented by ISIL, not just in the region but as the broader threat that this terrorist caliphate represents to all of us, including the security of this country.

Foreign Affairs  As our allies undertake a range of actions, we are contemplating next steps on how we can best be helpful. Let me be very clear. I believe that the mission undertaken by our allies—not just western allies, but a range of allies in the international community—are necessary actions and noble actions. When we think something is necessary and noble, we do not sit back and say only other people should do it.

Justice  I guess one could interpret that as opposition but I tend to interpret that as support. The position of the NDP is clear that the Supreme Court has set in place new and clear eligibility criteria. The government will act within that criteria.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, we have already answered that question. It is clear. The Supreme Court decision on Mr. Nadon is clear. As I said, unfortunately there are consequences to that decision. They are now saying that Federal Court judges from Quebec are second class judges and are ineligible to sit on the Supreme Court like their counterparts from the other provinces do.

Employment  The NDP members have voted against these changes and continue to inundate the Minister of Employment and Social Development with requests for temporary foreign workers for their own ridings. We have been extremely clear. It does appear to be the case that there are some Canadian employers who believe that they can have a preference for temporary foreign workers over Canadian workers. This government has been clear: that is absolutely unacceptable and it will not be tolerated.

National Defence  Mr. Speaker, what I will be very clear on is that this government will always take the appropriate course of action to protect the security of Canadians. A decision, which was supported by our party some years ago, was made not to participate in that system, given the risks that existed at the time.

Employment  However, once again, on one day the Liberal Party is demanding that fewer numbers be admitted under the program and on the next day Liberal members of Parliament are going to the minister of employment demanding that he overturn decisions and admit more temporary foreign workers. Our position is clear. We are committed to making sure that if Canadians are available, Canadians always get the available jobs.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, our position is clear. I received legal and constitutional advice indicating that it is longstanding practice to appoint judges directly from the Federal Court to the Supreme Court. That is what I did in this case.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, once again, we have been very clear on that question. The government will follow the decision of the majority of the Supreme Court of Canada. I repeat again, of course, that we agree with the majority decision. I would point out the difficulty that this is going to create going forward.

Veterans  Speaker, I have to correct what the leader of the NDP said in his preamble. The government has made clear from the outset its intention to pay for all the families of the fallen and to make sure that their costs are covered for the Afghan ceremony on May 9. We are very proud to do that. Also, we are taking a very large delegation of veterans with us to the D-Day ceremonies, and of course, as has always been our policy, we will make sure that veterans do not pay their own costs for that.

Justice  Mr. Speaker, we have already been clear on that. We will act according the letter and spirit of the Supreme Court decision. Now, on the matter at hand, as I have said before, last week it was suggested that the government, before making its appointment, had not been aware of the eligibility question.

Employment  Liberal MPs continue to write to the Minister of Employment and Social Development, demanding more temporary foreign workers for their ridings. It is absolutely clear that the government's position is that temporary foreign workers can be used when they are needed, but only when they are needed. They can never be used in place of available and willing Canadian workers.
