One example that's often quoted in Britain is that the big car companies in America spent hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying to prevent emission controls, but in the end they were forced to spend hundreds of millions more against their own interests because they found themselves with uncompetitive products. In contrast, those who got ahead of the curve found themselves in a strong market position.
