Sorry, I hoped you were going to come back with the tariffs and the brokerage fees.

Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, Department of Fisheries and Oceans

When we buy a vessel domestically, we don't pay an import duty on it, so we would show the purchase price contract. By separating these figures out, we can actually make a contract-to-contract comparison on a purchase of a vessel. If we had put those all together, then we'd have a project cost as opposed to a purchase cost, if you will. The other point, which I mentioned earlier, is that out of the $217 million above the contract price, the majority of that money is actually returned to government coffers.

So, is it fairly reflected as a cost of acquiring the ship or not? We'd like to give the cost of acquiring the ship and separate those dollars out. That's what we did.

They won't be this year. The first ship will come into service this year, and the other two, I believe, will follow in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

If I could, Mr. Chair, in recognition of our Coast Guard employees who are here today and of Coast Guard employees right across the country from coast to coast, it is Navy and Coast Guard Day today, so I thank you all for your service, and I'm sure all the committee joins me in this.
