There are a number of factors here. The first thing is that when people come into a preventive health program, there are a number of health professionals who are working with them, from the receptionist, to the phlebotomist, to the nurse, to the doctor. The second thing is the time we spend with them. We are getting to know them, their context, and the way they live their life. That matters.
The other big thing in prevention is our focus on the solution rather than the problem. We are much more interested in not what's wrong, but what's right, what needs to change, and what their goal or aspiration is for their health. That combination is very effective.
