I've been nominated to do that by the NDP caucus. I won't belabour this. This amends the purpose section to include the additional purposes to reduce the burden of addiction, disease, and death from tobacco use, and to incorporate the very oft-repeated goal that we've heard from the health minister and others to reduce the prevalence of the use of tobacco products every year to no more than 5% of the population by the year 2035.
We think this is a desirable amendment because it would allow a broader range of measures under the act. The minister testified before the committee that she wants to achieve that objective, so I think these goals would be more achievable if the government had legislative authority to aim for it in the purposes section.
