Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present a petition signed by a number of Canadians, including from my own riding of Mississauga South. It is on the subject matter of defending the traditional definition of marriage.
The petitioners point out that the majority of Canadians believe that fundamental matters of social policy should be decided by elected members of Parliament and not by an unelected judiciary. They state that 66% of Canadians, as was outlined in the most recent poll, support the current legal definition of marriage as the voluntary union of a single male and a single female to the exclusion of all others.
They therefore pray for Parliament to use all possible legislative and administrative measures, including invoking section 33, the notwithstanding clause, if necessary, to preserve and protect the current definition of marriage.
