Statements in the House

Bosnia December 14th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the government is choosing inaction on Bosnia now, but while Parliament is in recess over Christmas what will it do?

While Reform accepts NATO's protective role for the UN, will the foreign affairs minister stick to his commitment of recalling Parliament for a full debate before Canada considers giving NATO permission to enter into the war in an expanded way?

World Junior Hockey Championships December 13th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to inform the House that between December 26 and January 4 the world junior hockey championships will be taking place in my riding of Red Deer.

Everyone in Canada appreciates junior hockey. The people of my riding are incredibly proud to host the best juniors in the world. Red Deer has a great hockey tradition with its Western Hockey League team. Current NHL stars such as Glen Wesley and Mark Tinordi were born in Red Deer.

We look forward to watching all the future stars when they come to play for the world championship. Competitions like this will inspire the next generations to carry on Canada's proud hockey heritage. Come on out, watch the games and enjoy the competition. Together we will all promote Canada's great winter sport.

Petitions December 13th, 1994

Madam Speaker, it is my pleasure today to rise in the House to present a petition signed by a number of my constituents from the riding of Red Deer.

The citizens request that Parliament not amend the human rights code, the Canadian Human Rights Act or the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in any way that would tend to indicate societal approval of same sex relationships or of homosexuality, including amending the human rights code to include in the prohibited grounds of discrimination the undefined phrase sexual orientation.

Committees Of The House December 13th, 1994

Madam Speaker, when I was back in the constituency this weekend people were absolutely infuriated by just the mention of this increase in tax. We are already overtaxed. People are already taking their capital out of this country and people are on the brink of a tax revolt. I wonder if the government knows exactly what kind of balloons it is floating.

I would like to ask the member if he has that same feeling from the Canadian people because I do not believe the government is listening to the Canadian people.

Speaking the truth.

Bosnia December 7th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the complete failure of the CSCE summit in Budapest and the failure of the Prime Minister to even state his position during the Bosnian debate proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Canadian and UN peacekeepers have done their best. However the situation is beyond their mandate. The government wants a negotiated peace. But it wants what it cannot have.

At what point will the government accept that no negotiated settlement is forthcoming and pull out our troops?

Bosnia December 7th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, a week ago the Minister of National Defence said this about Bosnia: "We in Canada believe that obviously those detained should be released, that the hostilities should cease, there should be a ceasefire and that the Sarajevo airport should be reopened". He then hoped that the combatants would get down to meaningful discussions and negotiations within the next few days.

The minister is zero and five. Will the government stop wringing its hands and hoping for miracles and call for the multilateral withdrawal of UN forces from Bosnia?

Petitions December 2nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to present to Parliament a petition signed by 130 people in the Red Deer and surrounding area.

My constituents express their grave concerns with section 241 of the Criminal Code and the issue of assisted suicide and euthanasia.

The petitioners humbly pray that Parliament not repeal or amend section 241 of the Criminal Code in any way to uphold the Supreme Court of Canada decision of September 30, 1993, to disallow assisted suicide or euthanasia.

Bosnia December 1st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, if the contact group refuses to admit Canada when the Prime Minister asks this weekend in Budapest what exactly is the government going to do? Are we going to continue to be wimps in answering these sorts of things? Canadian lives are at stake and the people of this country want to know what the government is going to do.

Bosnia December 1st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the contact group on Bosnia was established in April, two of the five members being countries that had no troops there. Canada is one of the largest contributors but we are excluded.

Why did the government not do its job in April and demand our membership in the contact group? Why did this government wait silently for so long before it finally became involved as conditions worsened? The Canadian people want to know why.
