Statements in the House

Bosnia And Croatia May 1st, 1995

Mr. Speaker, we all know that the government would pull out of Bosnia and Croatia if the whole UN contingent was withdrawn.

Are there any cases, and what would those specific conditions be, in which we might take unilateral action to pull our troops out?

Bosnia And Croatia May 1st, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I want to assure the House that we are very interested in what is happening in the former Yugoslavia. As we are deploying troops in Bosnia and Croatia, UN troops are being blockaded in their barracks and their positions are being mined.

In Croatia a new military offensive has begun and several UN soldiers have been wounded.

With the situation deteriorating, just as the Reform Party predicted, when will the government finally realize that it should pull our troops out of Bosnia and Croatia?

Petitions April 26th, 1995

Madam Speaker, the last petition which I have to present is signed by 215 citizens. They request that Parliament support laws which will severely punish all violent criminals who use weapons in the commission of a crime and that Parliament support new Criminal Code firearms control provisions which recognize and protect the rights of law-abiding citizens to own and use recreational firearms.

Madam Speaker, the second petition which is signed by 42 people of my riding expresses their concern with abortion. The petitioners call upon Parliament to exercise its authority to enact legislation to halt abortion.

The first petition is signed by 45 people who express great concern with respect to the aiding or abetting of suicide and active or passive euthanasia.

Petitions April 6th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to present a petition signed by over 800 people in my riding of Red Deer. The citizens express their concern that they are already overburdened with taxation due to high government spending. Therefore, the petitioners humbly pray and request that Parliament reduce government spending instead of increasing taxes and implement a taxpayer protection act to limit federal spending.

Petitions April 3rd, 1995

Madam Speaker, the second petition is signed by 257 constituents.

The petitioners humbly pray that Parliament support laws that will severely punish all violent criminals who use weapons in the commission of crimes and that Parliament support legislation that will repeal and modify existing gun control laws which have not improved public safety or have not proven to be cost effective.

Petitions April 3rd, 1995

Madam Speaker, I would like to present two petitions today. The petitions are signed by constituents of the riding of Red Deer.

In the first petition, the citizens express their disapproval of special privileges being extended to same sex relationships and the inclusion of the phrase sexual orientation in the Canadian Human Rights Act. Therefore, the petitioners humbly pray and request that Parliament oppose any amendments to the Canadian Human Rights Act.

National Defence March 31st, 1995

Mr. Speaker, five Airbuses purchased by the Department of National Defence at a cost of $250 million three years ago have spent 11 months of the year on the ground.

National defence's spending $250 million taxpayer dollars for planes to sit on the ground for 11 months of the year is beyond comprehension. All the while we are spending another $45 million per year just to move our troops around the country. What is going on?

While it has been clear that the defence minister has many troubles in his department, this simply cannot go on. These planes and all the money we have been spending is not in the best interests of our troops and not in the best interests of taxpayers.

So my message is, stop the waste and spend the money on better equipment for our troops who work so hard and make Canadians proud.

National Defence March 30th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, this morning Liberal strategist Mike Robinson stated that the defence minister probably wakes up in the morning wondering what land mines someone might have planted for him when he arrives at his department.

If the minister cannot control or trust his staff, does the minister not agree that he needs to restructure his entire department from the top down?
