Mr. Speaker, I am glad the Minister of Health is in the House today to hear me present this petition.
Five hundred and fifty petitioners from my riding of Cambridge pray and request that the government make a commitment to renew the national AIDS strategy and maintain the current level of funding.
The Budget February 21st, 1997
Mr. Speaker, as our great nation heads into the next century, our economic prosperity and quality of life will be linked to our ability to innovate and generate new knowledge and to boldly face the challenges of our future.
I join the people of my riding of Cambridge in welcoming the finance minister's budget announcement providing funding support for innovation and research. The $800 million start-up investment in the Canadian Foundation for Innovation targets post-secondary institutions, research hospitals, the business community, the volunteer sector and individuals.
For the world class high technology industry in my riding of Cambridge the government's initial investment and its annual $180 million contribution will provide a tremendous boost.
This support will not only expand research but will keep Canada on the cutting edge of technology and lead to job opportunities for young Canadians.

Mr. Speaker, as well I would like to table petitions signed by citizens of Cambridge.
These citizens wish to draw to the attention of the House that 38 per cent of the national highway system is substandard. Our NAFTA partners are currently upgrading their national highway systems. Investment in Canada's national highway system would create jobs, spur economic growth, contribute to national unity and save lives.
For these reasons, the petitioners pray and request that the Parliament of Canada join with provincial governments to make the upgrading of our national highway system a priority.

Mr. Speaker, the next 370 petitioners have signed a petition praying and requesting the government to ensure that the present provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada prohibiting assisted suicide be enforced and that Parliament make no change in the law which would sanction or allow the aiding of a suicide or active or passive euthanasia.

Mr. Speaker, I have quite a few petitions here but I will table only a few today. Pursuant to Standing Order 36, I have the privilege to present to the House petitions from my riding of Cambridge.
The concerned citizens pray that the Government of Canada act immediately to extend protection to the unborn child by amending the Criminal Code to extend the same protection enjoyed by born human beings to unborn human beings.
Fire Safety Education February 12th, 1997
Mr. Speaker, in 1997 it is expected that more than 500 Canadians will die as a result of fires.
Fire damage related costs total over $10 billion annually. Studies show that public fire safety education not only saves lives but reduces the risk of fire.
Today I would like to congratulate the initiatives of the Kitchener-Waterloo Civitan Club along with the Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo fire departments to invest in a first class public fire safety education facility for the region.
The construction of the Children's Safety Village Fire Education Centre in Cambridge will help children and adults learn ways of preventing fires and protecting themselves from fires.
On behalf of my constituents, I applaud the civic initiative taken by the Civitan Club for its efforts to achieve this worthwhile goal and the ongoing dedication of our local firefighters.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada February 6th, 1997
Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to advise the House that today Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada announced plans to produce a new two door coupe at its facility located in my riding of Cambridge.
Production of a new Toyota coupe is expected to create 1,000 new jobs and represents an additional investment of $400 million in operations at the Cambridge plant.
Toyota's decision to produce 50,000 new cars a year reveals the high level of confidence in the workers of Cambridge and the community as a whole.
I would also like to mention that the federal government is playing a role in this good news announcement from Toyota with its contribution of $1 million for job training.

Special Olympics February 4th, 1997
Mr. Speaker, from February 1 to 8 Canada will host the sixth Special Olympics World Winter Games in Toronto and Collingwood.
During this week over 80 countries, including 2,000 athletes with mental disabilities will be giving it their all for the joy of sport, and will come together to build friendships and support in an atmosphere of acceptance and dignity.
Since 1968, Canadian athletes have been representing Canada at the Special Olympics and all have come home as winners. The mission of this World Games is to foster awareness and understanding both for the Special Olympics movement and for people with mental disabilities everywhere.
I would like to invite all Canadians to encourage and support our Special Olympians and their families by attending and cheering on our athletes at the 1997 Special Olympics World Winter Games.

Mr. Speaker, I have the privilege of presenting to the House petitions from concerned citizens of my riding.
The petitioners pray and request that the Parliament of Canada to introduce amendments to the Criminal Code to ensure that anyone convicted of impaired driving causing death receive a sentence from seven to a maximum of 14 years.
