Statements in the House

Infrastructure Program March 1st, 2000

Mr. Speaker, first I would like to thank my colleague from Oxford for his question.

The Minister of Finance has announced a $2.6 billion infrastructure program. It includes green municipal infrastructure, affordable housing and highways to answer the needs of rural and urban communities in our country. Now that the financial parameters are known, I intend to start negotiations with our partners in April and hope to sign an agreement by the end of this year, as we said in the Speech from the Throne.

Main Estimates 2000-01 February 29th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Orders 81(4) and 81(6), I move:

That the main estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2000, laid upon the table on February 29, 2000, be referred to the several standing committees of the House in accordance with the detailed allocation attached.

There is a lengthy list associated with the motion. If it is agreeable to the House, I would ask that the list be printed in Hansard as if it had been read.

Human Resources Development February 9th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the mark of a good government is its knowing how to deal with a problem.

What do we do? We identify the problem, its nature and its scope. The minister has done that. We also develop a plan of action to remedy the department's problems. The minister has done that.

In addition, we ensure that there is follow up to be sure the procedure underway will remedy the problems discovered. This is exactly what my colleague at Human Resources Development has done.

Year 2000 December 16th, 1999

Mr. Speaker, I thank my colleague from Essex for the question. I know that as chair of the industry committee she has been following this issue very carefully.

The health, safety, security and well-being of Canadians remain our priority. I am pleased to report that the government-wide mission critical systems are over 99% ready. Although we do not expect any major disruptions, we have developed contingency plans so Canadians will continue to receive essential services in our country. Indeed we work very closely with provincial governments and the private sector.
