Statements in the House

Young Offenders Act April 22nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, five young men, including a young offender, have been arrested in my riding for the senseless murder of a temple caretaker.

The RCMP is pleading for calm, patience and tolerance as their investigation continues. And the slow wheels of justice turn. Why will the justice minister not introduce changes to the Young Offenders Act in a timely fashion? That time is now. The clock is ticking and time is running out for her number one priority.

Cida April 21st, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the CIDA minister has allowed $815 million of CIDA money to be spent mostly on feasibility studies for projects that do not even get off the ground. There is no follow-up procedure to verify how the money is spent. Businesses take the money and run. The money does not reach the poor. There is no accountability.

Will the minister call in the auditor general because she failed to stop the waste of tax—

International Development April 20th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, last night millions of Canadians watched in anger as officials from CIDA admitted that hundreds of millions of dollars do not go to the needy countries where it is supposed to go.

This money is going to huge Canadian corporations instead of helping the poorest of the poor in developing countries. This is totally unacceptable.

Will the minister call in the auditor general immediately to investigate this?

Health April 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the government needs transplant surgery. The Liberal government is chronically ill. It has made our health care system so sick it needs intensive care. The Liberals are not responding to therapy. They created a three tiered health system with a double standard.

First, there is the regular system that is sick and failing us. The second tier is where Canadians wait and wait for treatment, even three to four hours for emergency treatment in Surrey Central. Third, rich people get treatment in the U.S. anyway.

The Liberals decide who to help and who not to help: a double standard. The Liberals help some hepatitis C victims but not other hepatitis C victims.

Liberal backbenchers are squirming and crying out in pain because of their government's cruel and heartless torture of Canadians sick from tainted blood.

We do not have a health system in Canada. We have a sickness system. The Liberals have a health problem: they have no vision and they cannot hear.

Fisheries March 25th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am from B.C. Let us look at how the fisheries minister handled the problem of fish in B.C. creeks.

There was a conservation initiative called the habitat mapping and inventory program. The government spent $115,000 on the program. It was ready to go but last month some members of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union criticized the minister. To punish them he cancelled the program, throwing 45 workers out of work and endangering the fish habitat.

Why does the minister always put politics ahead of what is best for the fishery?

British Columbia March 23rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, this following is a list of reasons why British Columbians ignore the Liberals.

The Liberals leave B.C. under-represented in the Senate. They will not let B.C. elect our senators.

The Liberals are killing B.C.'s salmon fishery, mining industry, tourism industry and softwood lumber industry. They are killing jobs in B.C.

The Liberals have cut transfer payments affecting B.C.'s education and health services. They do not give B.C. our fair share of government contracts.

The Liberals will not get tough on crime. They leave B.C.'s streets and homes unsafe.

The Liberals are killing B.C. with high taxes.

They shutdown B.C.'s coast guard. They turned off B.C.'s lighthouses.

The Liberals closed CFB Chilliwack and left us without emergency preparedness.

The Liberals have ignored British Columbia and British Columbia will ignore the Liberals.

Canadian International Development Agency March 19th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, CIDA gives out contracts worth billions of dollars. My home province of British Columbia receives only 3% to 4% of these contracts, even after the open bidding contracting system was installed. The two central Canadian provinces received well over 90% of those contracts.

Can the minister come clean and explain the inequitable and unfair treatment that British Columbians are receiving? What has she done to address this unfairness?

Supply March 17th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, maybe he is not the member who displayed the flag but it is in that same corner that the flag was displayed.

Supply March 17th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am more than happy to answer the question. He is one of the members who displayed the six foot flag on the other side of the House the day the budget was tabled. Where was he or his colleagues—

Supply March 17th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, we expect these comments from the member of a party that is out of touch with Canadians.

The issue is not putting a flag on a desk. The issue is why we are not allowed to put a flag on our desks when we want to put one there. For many years there were no flags on the desks of members of the House. We did not start the problem.

The members who are not listening now are the ones who are using it as a political football. The issue was decided upon by members on the other side. They displayed the flag. Why did they not object the other day when the flag was displayed on the other side of the House? It is simply because they want to get political mileage out of it, which they will be unsuccessful in doing.

We respect the Canadian flag. If we respect the Canadian flag then why are we forced not to display it in the House?
